OP how dare you keep this in tags, everything about this AU is PERFECT
Yes yes Yiling Wei Sect teaching safe and controlled demonic cultivation is very sexy but I think too many people overlook that Wei Wuxian is first and foremost an inventor! He is a man of science! Manipulating resentful energy and doing necromancy is only ONE of the many things this man has done or come up with that changed the cultivation world. Yiling Wei Sect AU where the burial mounds are crowded with workshops and laboratories, forges and studios. Little shidis run errands, fetching and carrying crafting materials, and in addition to the older disciples teaching cultivation there are also classes held for mundane trades and crafts, to be combined and reworked in new and incredible ways. Talismans, enchanted objects, spiritual tools and weapons, useful gadgets. Workrooms full of long, low tables where disciples work shoulder-to-shoulder on their newest inventions, shouting ideas and suggestions from one end of the room to the other. Swords are still traditional, but the Wei Sect is always inviting guest instructors to teach other forms of weaponry, and it’s not unusual for a student’s actual preferred weapon to be something other than a sword. Classes are chaos, students are encouraged to argue and debate, and no topic is ever considered “mastered” even by the teachers – there is always more to learn, to explore, to invent or re-invent. We teach all that is known, but not all that IS. Respect the old ways, but don’t be mindlessly obedient to them. Yiling being the fantasy equivalent of the most technologically advanced city in the world. Not all the things the Wei sect come up with are strictly for cultivation, after all. There are talisman-powered looms and plows that pull themselves and little crystal charms that store spiritual energy so that even non-cultivators can activate the flameless lanterns that light the town and the moving platform that will carry them up the mountain path, if they have right or reason to go visit the burial mounds. What I’m saying is that they’re all nerds. They’re all nerds, is what I’m saying.

Fic Finder
Feb 6th
~*~
1. Hi!
I've been watching your content for a while and I really liked it, so I would like you to please help me find a fic.
This fic is a One shot with a/b/o theme (wwx omega LWJ alpha) where wwx lived a "house" for omegas (where he is a friend of mm) and they "borrow" it for prince Lwj, Lxc ( alpha) is the emperor and JGY (omega) is his partner.
In Gusu, omegas are not considered for cultivation, however, wwx doesn't care much about that and there is a scene where he along with LWJ fight in a cave with a monster. The final scene of the one shot occurs when WWX runs away from Gusu to the beach, LWJ follows him because they promised to visit the sea one day together.
the wangxian relationship is slow and with lwj's problems to express his feelings 😓
I would appreciate your help, if you need more information, I will gladly try to remember more things😊 and sorry for the grammar, my native language is not English (google translator)
FOUND? Rattling our cages by danegen (E, 69k, wangxian, A/B/O, but like polite, Slow Burn, Pining while fucking, so much hair combing, WWX has a vagina, POV WWX, no yin iron or wars or plot really, Canon Era, spiders--see the notes, Spanish Translation Available)
~*~
2. Heya! Can y'all help me find a fic?
The part of the plot i remember is that WWX uses an array to erase himself and the wens from the memory of the cultivation world. The array stops one day, and a bunch of people go to the burial mounds to see what's up. It was on ao3, probably.
and that's ~all i remember~
a nice fic but not the one i remember. pretty sure wwx was hiding in the burial mounds with the wens. thanks for this fic tho!

3. Hi, i was looking for a fic i think i found in your blog? It was a wip and it was something along the line of wwx as yilling patriarch and the sects sent lan wangji for tribute. But they already knew each other.
I remember this one scene where lan wangji finds bunnies inside the burial mounds but wwx captures them to eat and lwj is sad.
I don't remember the title or anything because i think i directly clicked the link and started reading but then i forgot to bookmark it and lost the link.
Please help me find it, i really wanna know what happened next.🙏😔
FOUND? The Jade Bride by lanwangjibo (Not rated, 16k, wangxian, WIP, Pining LWJ, YLLZ WWX, Misunderstandings, POV WWX, POV LWJ, Fluff and Angst, WQ Lives, Wēn Remnants Live, LSZ is a Wēn, WWX is Bad at Feelings, LWJ is Bad at Communicating, SS Being an Asshole, Pining WWX, Hurt LWJ, BAMF WWX, Angst with a Happy Ending)

4. fic finder request! looking for two fics that i can't seem to locate in my bookmarks - A) in the first one, sizhui (and the rest of the juniors?) somehow reach through time and rescue wwx (i think dead in present time), bringing him into their present! in the process they create a lot of trouble, due to the power expended and released, i believe they turned a mountain into a crater or something.
B) the second fic I'm looking for takes place during the sunshot campaign, when baoshan sanren decides to join the fight and intervenes. she restores both jc and wwx's cores, by reaching back into time and removing jc's core right before it's melted by wzl, she also returns wwx's core from jc's to wwx's body. she does this in her tent, which is also a dimension travel portal or something which iirc links back to her home on the mountain.
thank you very much!! @potatokunst
4A)
FOUND! Would You Come Home? by s6115 (Not rated, 46k, WangXian, Junior Quartet Centric, Time Travel Fix-It, Canon Divergence, Junior Quartet Dynamics)
4B)
FOUND! Can't Tell Me Nothin by natacup82 (T, 35k, WangXian, Canon Divergence, Everybody Lives, Family Feels, Communication, BAMF Women) Baoshan Sanren return Jiang Cheng's core from the past in chapter 4
~*~
5. hi! gosh, i have had this fic stuck in my head for the past weeks but for the life of me, i just cannot remember the name. i really hope you can help me find it!
the fic is about how modern wei wuxian is a researcher/scientist and he got his hands on a shady book written by baoshan sanren, accidentally triggers a talisman/array and somehow being transported into the wuxia version and it involves the people who died coming back to life and they all watch/read the past and it just sort of becomes one big therapy session.
i think i remember there being a part in the fic where modern wei wuxian mentions transferring/donating his organ to modern jiang cheng in reference to how og wei wuxian transfered his gold core to og jiang cheng.
and also a part where it was mention that for modern wei wuxian, it was madam yu who found and brought him back to the jiang family to be raised and not sect leader jiang; also it was implied that the modern jiang family is actually a loving happy family in contrast to the sort of dysfunctional og one because modern wei wuxian address's madam yu and sect leader jiang as mother and father.
i wish i could remember more, i hope this would be enough to go on. please help me and thank you so much in advance! @lilith--14
I believe this fic has been deleted but please correct me if I'm wrong - Mod C
FOUND? Yes the fic was deleted. It's "Loving Future, Distant Past" by yareyarejojosan. Here is a link to a folder that contains all of the author's fics
~*~
6. For a fic finder, there was this nsfw kinda darkji (probably pwp) fic that haunts me and might have been deleted, becaused i’ve searched in every way I know how: (post?)canon, wwx can’t get hard anymore for some reason. He is embarrassed to admit it to lwj, who then calms him and says it’s normal and that he doesn’t use it for much anyway. Turns out lwj was the one who started and keeps giving him the tea for impotence. The lan doctors are in on this(?) Thanks if anyone can identify this one!
I don’t think 6 on the last fic finder was it (still a delishiously dark-ish rec, thank you!), it was (probably) a shorter pwp and not modern
NOT FOUND You Sing of Thanatos; I Hear Only Eros by kanonkita (E, 39k, WangXian, MIND THE TAGS, Modern AU, Extremely Dubious Consent, Dark!LWJ, Mild Horror, Omorashi, Tentacles, Rope Bondage, Shibari, Praise Kink, Breeding Kink, Oviposition, Non-Consensual Body Modification, soft pillow talk, Hurt/Comfort, non-consensual emotional healing, Panic Attacks, Wetting, Body Horror, Impotence, Magic, Anal Sex, PIV Sex, Mpreg, Mild Suicidal Ideation, Voyeurism, PWP, Angst, nonconsensual medical treatment)
FOUND? Succumbing to His unconditional love? by MurderRose (E, 2k, wangxian, mildly dom/sub, WWX's floppy little cock, the trials of being utterly loved, LWJ can be a tiny bit dark as a treat, opt in or opt out at your will, its almost invisibly mild, a lil bit of humiliation)
~*~
7. Hello (✿◠‿◠) hope you having a good day! This is for the fic finder, I've been looking for this fic where after his death wwx comes back as a rabbit, it has a glossary at the start for words/terms the rabbits use, I think? I really hope this is enough to go form!
FOUND! Dignity and Animality by quick_cat_tl (G, 31k, WangXian, Watership Down, u know the one with the political/philosophical bunnies, Reincarnation, Lapine language, Rabbit!WWX, Sunny Angst, Pining) Hi, number 7 is probably „Dignity and Animality“ by Anielka. Unfortunately, it seems to be deleted on AO3. / For #7, I remember reading "Dignity and Animality!" When I click the link for it (from the wangxianficrecs tumblr), it redirects to Dignity and Animality by quick_cat_tl - maybe the author changed their AO3 handle? / The question about #7 - I copied the link for the current posting for that story and then took it into the wayback machine where that same link does pull up the story being underneath the original name mentioned back in 2021, so it was a name change and not a repost.
~*~
8. I’m looking for a fic, one chapter, Lan Wangji is a teacher in Cloud Recesses. He takes Wei Wuxian to the Jingshi and it’s implied that he told Wei Wuxian he’d not tell anyone what Wei Wuxian had done so long as Wei Wuxian let him fuck him.
~*~
9. Hi! I hope you can help me find this. All I can remember is that WWX fell asleep in the cold spring and I think Lwj or Lqr saw his body few hours later and wwx is cold as if he is already dead.
FOUND? 🔒 Warming up (to him) by barisan (T, 9k, LQR & WWX, WangXian, Hypothermia, Cloud Recesses Study Arc, Temporary Character Death, Medical Inaccuracies, YZY Abuses WWX, JFM Bashing, pre-wangxian, Good Uncle LQR, Angst with a Happy Ending, Hurt/Comfort)

10. Hi! Your work on this blog is absolutely amazing! For fic finder, I've been searching for a fic I read awhile ago. It's post-canon. WWX is traveling and writing to LWJ, but letters stop coming. LWJ searches and finds that to prevent a creature from preying on a local child, WWX took it on himself but to prevent the curse from hurting anyone else, he's hiding in a cave, constantly drinking to dull the effects.
FOUND? Fire in the Blood by Jo Lasalle (Jo_Lasalle) (M, 20k, wangxian, First Time, Post-Canon, Angst with a Happy Ending, hurt/comfort themes)
~*~
11. Hey I read a book recently, in there, there was a scene where, wwx was protecting someone? Or someone was protecting wwx? By standing on one side of fire and the attackers/i think it was jins or someone on the other side of fire. The scene was fierce. They were like us against the world type of scene. Do u know this fic? @constellationdks
#11 for recent fic finder here, thnx for the rec but it's not the one. The one I'm looking for is quite long, I think it was more than 30 or 40k. Also the scene wasn't with a yuan.
I know number 11 and I'm trying to search for it. It's wwx holding a-yuan in his arms in an alleyway when they are attacked by the jin. The premise has something to do with that strength parents get when defending their children? 🤔 let me get back to you!
NOT FOUND Hysterical Strength by covalentbonds (Not Rated, 3k, WIP, WangXian, Canon Divergence, Parent WWX, Fix-It of Sorts, Everybody Lives/Nobody dies) Wwx is out one evening with a-yuan when he is ambushed by the jin.
~*~
12. Fic finder please! 🙏
This would be a hybrid/warprize LWJ where he was a bunny hybrid and WWX was a snake. WRH has LWJ shipped off to WWX, who ends up helping him and eventually gets him reunited with LXC.
I remember there was art of LWJ and rabbits bc WWX was trying to help him calm down. I’ve read this sometime last year and can’t find it anywhere! 😭😭
FOUND! 山水盆景 (Shānshuǐ Pénjǐng) by meicairoubingfan (kiradyn) (M, 64k, WangXian, warprize AU warprize lwj, Slow Burn, Strangers to Lovers, Vers WangXian, Top WWX, Top LWJ/Bottom WWX, Animal Traits, Non-ABO Universe, Snake Demon Lord WWX, Animal Traits, Hand Jobs, Seduction, Found Family, Wedding In The Cloud Recesses, Handfasting In The Cold Spring Cave, Alternate 3Zun, Alternative Sunshot Campaign, Hinted Future ChenLi, YZY is a better mother, JYL Is Not A Wilting Wallflower, empowerment, Side-Character Cameos, Rabbit Sanctuary In The Burial Mounds, Cutest Little Bun MXY, Accidental Child Acquisition, Child MXY)

13. (First part added to itmf) But I’m looking for a modern au were even though jc’s family is rich they don’t give wwx and jc pocket money and they were hungry in front of a bakery? And wwx used the « orphan in the street card » and lwj bought him food
I don’t know if it’s the same one but I think at some point wwx bought lwj home while he was drunk and waited for lxc to come pick him up and jc saw them talking on the couch and he thought they were dating (they weren’t together yet)
ANYWAY thank you for everything ✨✨✨ @ihaveasoftspotfora-yuan

14. Hi! for the fic finder please, there was a fic where lz read on a book abt the hannaki disease and he thought it beautiful so he started choking himself on gentian flowers to imitate the feeling @cocoaphil

15. Hello, I am looking for a fic I read some time ago (it could be a few years). I think it was post-canon, Lan WangJi and Wei WuXian were together. LWJ gets cursed and the only thing he has in mind is killing WWX (since he sees him only as the big bad Yiling Laozu). At the end, WWX pretends LWJ killed him and the curse is lifted. It was posted on ao3. Thank you for your hard work! And have a great day!
I think I remember this fic! It starts out with WWX accidentally cursing LWJ with a talisman while they were in the jingshi and ends with WWX running to the burial mounds, finding out there are people who worship him living there, and he uses the incense burner to trick LWJ into thinking he killed him to break the curse, right? I can't recall the name though - Mod C
FOUND? all the broken things that I made by ilip13 (E, 43k, WangXian, Post-Canon, Established Relationship, Angst with a Happy Ending, Angst and Hurt/Comfort, Lovers To Enemies, (then back to lovers I'm not a monster), Dubcon Kissing, Dubious Consent, But mostly not in the way you might expect - see notes for details, Explicit Sexual Content, Bondage, Flirting, Competence Kink) might be this? I haven't read it yet, but the summary sounds like what they are looking for!

16. Okay I could have easily dreamt this up but I could have sworn there was a fic where either LWJ or WWX was in a orchestra and his band mates thought he was married to wen qing because she was the one to always bring a Yuan to him after school or something only to think he was cheating when his actual husband comes by pls tell me I didn't dream this
~*~
17. Hi! im sorry i lost a fic and i need help. It was an old wangxian fic, where LXC He's emperor (?) and LWJ is engaged to WWX, in this fic they get married and there are problems with the marriage because LWJ was a little bad during their engagement, since they were children. WWX was always trying to get his attention until one day he gave up. In the fic there is a part where Su She shoots WWX with an arrow and LWJ punishes him in some way.I remember it was also a Tumblr AU that later become a fic
NOT FOUND! rebuttable presumption by @sarah-yyy
NOT FOUND! Burning Bridges by Keysmashed (E, 12k, wangxian, arranged marriage, misunderstandings, pining, angst w/ happy ending, family drama, swordfighting, non-graphic smut, emotional rollercoaster, love confessions, everyone lives au) it’s probably not this one because su she is not in it and it’s not royalty but wx are engaged and wy does give up so even if it’s not you might like it
FOUND! permissive presumption by sarahyyy (G, 7k, WangXian, Royalty, Arranged Marriage, Pining, Mutual Pining, Misunderstandings) could also be permissive presumption by sarahyyy, on AO3, which is an AU of the author's fic on tumblr

18. Hi! This is for fic finder. WWX is killed by SMS in sunshot campaign. He then resurected years later by MXY in JGS order. WWX and LWJ fight together. WWX hand is blackened i think. JGS refused to tell WWX what is MXY wish is. In last chapter, JGS is killed by JGY or Madam Jin and WWX is free from the curse. I think JGS death is because of NHS plot i think. Thank you! @idontknowwhattowriteforusername
Hi! I'am #18 from the latests fic finder. I want to add some details. Not much but i hope someone can recognize it. Jin Ling and Lan Jingyi was sent to Qishan either as a hostage or indocrination. In there, everytime they are punished, Wen Ning and Wen Yuan help them to make the punishment lighter. Sometimes they warned Jin Ling, Lan Jingyi, and other junior everytime other wen sect member (the one that didnt hesitate to punush them harshly) nearby. I think Wen Qing too help everytime the punishment is so harsh that caused injury, she make them stay in infirmary where they are safe

19. Hello! I’m looking for a fic where mxy and wwx are a couple who take lwj home for a night in a modern AU. The beginning talks about how mxy and wwx looked so similar that when they first met they were worried they were related. Lwj is on the verge of being in love w/ wwx, but he’s hesitant to act on it bc of the relationship between wwx & mxy. Once he’s in bed with them there’s a line about red satin sheets for special guests. It’s such a specific premise but I couldn’t find it on ao3😭

10.  Hey!! Hope you're doing good.. For the next in the mood for post do you happen to know any fic where lwj and lxc are on bad terms (maybe because of wwx or jgy?)
Sacrifices Made with Blood by NocturnalFriend (M, 75k, wangxian, WIP) -  a time travel au where LXC is partly responsible for WWX and LWJ’s deaths which causes them to go back in time and starts off with them having a very tense relationship and LXC trying to fix it after he finds out what his future self did. I think the way it goes about LWJ and LXC’s fractured relationship is really good.

11.  Help? I'm looking for good long fics where wangxian is not the main pairing. They don't even have to be in it at all! But it's so hard to filter through ao3 when you're not looking for a specific pairing, or fics without any main relationship at all. I've exhausted the fics 40k+ in the xicheng, sangcheng, and xiyao tags. Xuanli is almost always a background pair. I don't really read any fics focused on pregnancy (m or f) or a/b/o, so that's also limiting. Have you come across any good Gen or rare pair epics or series? I love what you do here 💛, you're an invaluable resource!
Modern Sunshot AU by Eleanor_Fenyx (E, 171k, 3zun, 3 works, series in progress)
Building a home by R95irth (G, 586k, Jiang parents, Wei parents) -  Main pairings are yxy/jfm and wcz/cssr and I don't think you get a rarer pair than those! Especially in terms of length, clever plot, and really good storytelling!
3Zun Fixit AU by Eleanor_Fenyx (E, 127k, 3zun 12 works, series in progress)

江山如有待 | It Seems the Hills and Rivers Have Been Waiting by ScarlettStorm (E, 229k, jiang cheng/ofc, WIP)
I strongly recommend Lise's stuff, esp some good mistakes (T, 18k, wangxian) - WWX gets kidnapped and LWJ and Jiang Cheng have A Very Awkward Roadtrip to get him back - and  With Absolute Splendor (T, 44k, wangxian, jiang cheng) -  where Jiang Cheng insists on planning the Wangxian wedding, but v much focused on Jiang Cheng's Complicated Feelings rather than on Wangian
Gentle Exile by rynleaf (E, 10k, lan xichen/song lan)
Someone Who Understands by treemaidengeek (T, 48k, lan xichen/song lan, 8 works, series in progress) -  the first three works are short, skippable but wonderful prequel stories, it really gets going in To Love What Is Mortal
Better, Greater, or Otherwise Different by ChloeBYoung (G, 23k, wangxian) -  outsider pov set after canon ends and focuses more on a Guest disciple stumbling upon Wei Wuxian and not knowing who he is and becoming friends with him It’s outsider POV, so WangXian is barely a part of it

Rise of the Peacock by JustAWanderingBabbit (not rated, 51k, xuanli, 3zun, wangxian, WIP) -  Xuanli-centric, with a developing 3zun secondary and Wangxian to the side; JZX is transported back in time from the moment of his death to his first fight with WWX at Gusu Summer School, and strives to set things right from there.

do you love fics where wei wuxian and lan wangji parent the crap out of lan sizhui? do you want to read accidental baby acquisition fics until your eyes bleed? would you die as your heart slowly turns to mush from the softness of this family? bitch the fuck, me too. here are some of my personal favourite fics of wangxian ft their turnip son a-yuan. its a range of canon divergence, post canon, thirteen years of inquiry, raising a-yuan at the burial mounds au etc - there’ll be something for literally everyone. enjoy!
the kite string and the anchor rope by fleurdeliser (38k+)
When A-Yuan gets sick and Wen Qing doesn't have the supplies she needs to properly treat him, Wei Wuxian can only think of one place to go for help.
a crying shame by thunderwear (16k+)
Lan Wangji gets emotionally blackmailed by a toddler. It somehow fixes everything.
to recollect and long for by wonderlands (22k+) *2/3 works posted at time of posting this rec list.
a 3-part series about best boy lan sizhui and his wonderful dads who love him and each other very much.
forgetting envies, remembering your loving hold by cosmicfuss (3k+)
The first time Zewu-jun plays for him he is five and the man is trying to comfort him, playing soft songs good for soothing children. It works to a degree but he wants his gege, he wants his gege to play his lullaby. Zewu-jun apologizes and tells him that his gege is hurting right now, and needs to be alone to get better.
When he plays the xiao, A-Yuan says, "you're holding it wrong!" When he turns fourteen, he learns to play guqin, and is many years ahead of his classmates in that regard. A large factor in that is how much he has practiced Inquiry. He has grown up hearing snippets from the jingshi, of Wangji attempting to reach a spirit that never answers.
When he's sixteen, he hears a familiar tune played in the forest, he and his fellow juniors battling a stone god. It's been years since he's heard it, and he wonders why this man, Mo Xuanyu, knows it so well.
Or, Lan Sizhui grows up and learns, and remembers.
five times wei wuxian tried to embarrass lan sizhui by blackelement7 (6k+)
(and one time he realized just how badly he'd played himself)
or: In which Wei Wuxian starts a fight but Lan Sizhui (with some meddling from Lan Jingyi) ends it.
inquiry by incendir (10k+)
Sizhui cannot fall asleep for a long, long time that night. He hears the ever-familiar melody again. He thinks perhaps he has memorized it by now.
storge by respira (9k+)
Lan Sizhui is a lake.
as the warren grows in number by kore_fics (3k+)
Before Sizhui could take another step he was surrounded by black and red, loud laughter in his ears and warm fingers running through his hair, messing it up. Palms squished both his cheeks together and Lan Sizhui let out a laugh.
Lan Sizhui was home.
tell some storm* by qurbat (31k+) *the moments with Sizhui are in chapter 2, however I highly recommend reading the whole fic, it’s adorable.
"We were raised as a generation of war, A-Yuan," Xian-gege said to him. "If your generation choses to be one of love - well, I don't think any of us would be opposed to that."
In the aftermath of the events at the Guanyin temple, the cultivation world scrambles to understand their current reality. A man roams the countryside with a string of white in his hair. Another sits on the highest seat of power with a ribbon of red around his forehead. The younger generation turns out to be full of romantics. Nie Huaisang is to blame for everything, always. Jiang Cheng realizes that happiness has been more that 16 years overdue.
Wei Wuxian declares that it's time that bitch pays up.
After a generation of war - much to the consternation of the elders, much to the delight of the young, much to the pleased shock of the subjects of the tale - the world welcomes a love story with open arms.
guess we're not eating leaves today by missingnarwhal (2k+)
Baby A-Yuan has cooked up a feast, but only one lucky gege will actually get to taste it!
Set in an alternate timeline where everything is okay after Wei Ying + Wens started living in the Burial Mounds.
response by aki_no_hikari (12k+)
What if Wei Wuxian hadn't been silent to Lan Wangji's Inquiry?
love, in all its small pieces by ynvel (4k+)
Ah Yuan is brought to the Cloud Recesses and exchanges the sun and its ashes for the clouds. Lan Wangji brings a boy home, calls him his son, and renews the promises he made.
Or: Lan Sizhui is adopted by Lan Wangji and learns about his new life. Lan Wangji in turn learns about hope and living again.
child surprise by ariaste (4k+)
He huffs a sigh. “Fine. Just - let’s just make it the law of surprise, shall we? That’s nice and simple, eh? Leave it up to destiny what will bring us back in balance. Let it drop something of yours into my lap, something small, and we’ll call the debt paid.”
Three debts, three repayments.
there's a lunatic in mo village by bastetcg (11k+)
There's a lunatic in Mo Village! And to Lan Sizhui's surprise, Hanguang-Jun has decided to bring the madman back to the Cloud Recesses! How embarrassing!
A mostly canon-compliant look into Lan Sizhui's thoughts and childhood.
on being a big boy by emberloey (1k+)
“My little A-Yuan,” Dad had said the next morning, kneeling down to A-Yuan’s height with a smile, “all grown up now. Soon you’ll be hunting without your poor old dads.”
“Never!” A-Yuan shook his head and latched onto Father’s leg. He smiled up at Father, who smiled back and nodded his head. “A-Yuan always needs Dad and Father!”
in all these shades of blue (i think we found you) by fleetling (5k+)
5 times Sizhui thought about his father's white robes, and 1 time Lan Wangji wore blue.
(Or: Lan Sizhui had never seen his father in anything other than white robes.)
this is when the feeling sinks in, i don't want to miss you like this (come back, be here) by mischievousmurmurs (6k+)
Just now… the butterflies’ conversation. Where did you learn that from, Ah-Yuan?
Ah-Yuan pats his chest. In here, shushu. I feel it in here. And in here, too, he adds, pointing to his head.
Sizhui has never quite been able to remember nor forget the memory of seeing people who he knows loved each other, loved him, and whom he loved in return.
or - a wangxian story, as told by their adopted son.
yours, mine, and ours by casecous (2k+)
When they have both mostly recovered, and A-Yuan is back to his smiling, playful self, Lan Wangji presents him with a forehead ribbon. A-Yuan’s little fingers bump into Lan Wangji’s thumbs as he traces the cloud motif along it.
“You are Lan now. This is very important,” Lan Wangji tells him and A-Yuan looks away from the ribbon to meet his eyes. “You must not take it off as you please. Only family may touch it.”
A series of wangxian family moments.
innocence by snowberryrose (8k+)
In which Wei WuXian gets to raise A-Yuan.
Canon divergence from episode 31.
to recollect and long for by mme_anxious (4k+)
Lan Xichen is there when his brother becomes a father. Lan Sizhui is there when his father's heart breaks, again. Wei Wuxian is there when his son gets drunk for the first time.
Or, the GusuLan forehead ribbon, in three parts.
our little one by writedeku (6k+)
A-Yuan is here. A-Yuan, who Wei Ying loved so much. A-Yuan, who was taught to laugh just like him. Wangji hugs him to his chest and curls over him, ignoring the way the wounds on his back pull and tear. “I have to take care of you,” he says. “I will not leave you.”
(Or: Lan Wangji comes back from Yiling with a child he does not know how to care for and a black hole in his chest. Somehow, he makes it work.)
gathered herbs & sweet grasses by hansbekhart (19k+)
Later, when he’s older, it’s this that A-Yuan will remember most: the stretch of silence, the two of them both dirty and shaking with fever, as he looked at Brother Rich, and Brother Rich looked back at him.
the sacred homeland by particulate (8k+)
He has many names, and some are mouthfuls of blood.
[Or; a chronology of Sizhui, in which he does not forget.]
to the act of making noise by words-writ-in-starlight (19k+)
His father in white plays the song late into the night, and when A-Yuan wakes up confused and afraid, the guqin lulls him back to sleep.
Lan Sizhui hears his father play the same song every night for his whole life, and never, ever get an answer.
when he comes home to you by kika988 (2k+)
Home is Cloud Recesses now, and that's a thing Wei Wuxian is still getting used to. He still feels like a guest here, most days, though Lan Wangji has done everything to make him feel at home. He stands out like a sore thumb amongst the serene disciples and flowing white fabric.
Cloud Recesses has been home to Lan Wangji and Sizhui for years. It is their home, where they've built their family.
The thought warms Wei Wuxian even as it sits a little ill with him. He's an intruder here, in their homes, in their lives, the same way he had been in Lotus Pier.
five times people didn’t know sizhui is lan zhan’s son and one time they did by trilliastra (3k+)
“A-Yuan.” He repeats, reaching out for the boy, growing restless when he can’t touch him. “A-Yuan.”
Oh. Lan Xichen closes his eyes as the tears start to fall. Oh, Wangji.
Carefully, Lan Xichen takes the boy and lays him next to his brother on the bed, Wangji holds him protectively against his chest and A-Yuan stops his little cries immediately.
“Wangji,” Lan Xichen tries again, running a hand through his brother’s hair softly, “who is he?”
“He’s my son.”
5 times the lan head disciple broke the rules by liji (6k+)
“I am not aware of any rule forbidding falling in love,” Hanguang-Jun said at last. There was a quiet sadness in his eye, like he was watching a scene from far away. The novelty of it gave Sizhui the courage to ask his next question.
“Have you ever been in love, Father?” he asked.
(or, five times that Sizhui broke the Lan sect's rules growing up)
the seasons change (but i love you the same) by kdkdkd (7k+)
"Hanguang-jun!"
When did you stop calling me Bàba, A-Yuan?
Lan Wangji had always promised himself that he would never become a poor father like his own had been.
Unfortunately, it feels like he has failed to keep that promise.
✨ bonus round ✨ uncle jiang cheng and nephew lan sizhui
tintinnabulum by respira (8k+)
A small bell chimes, the sound soft and pleasant like the water crashing against a pier, like low whistles in an empty cave, like a guqin playing a lullaby.

MDZS Fanfic Recs! #7
November 2021
Trying to get back into the swing of doing these, lets see how long it’ll last!
Wei Ying, Come Home. by SuzukiMei [Ongoing]
"It’s been just four years, but everything seems so different. His hair now free on his back with just a red ribbon holding it together in a half-ponytail, blows with the warm wind of the summer, and without looking back,
Wei Ying leaves. "
Or, feeling that sooner or later the cultivation world might kill him, an eighteen years old Wei Ying decides to leave home for good. Meeting beautiful places, dangerous people, demons, ghost kings and even gods, he discovers about himself and his cultivation.
On the other side, he forces the whole cultivation world get it together, plus a very angry and worried Jiang Wanyin, and one Hanguang-jun following every lead to bring his Wei Ying back home.
My “currently reading” pick! This is an interesting take on a vaguely modern cultivation AU with a few extra MXTX crossovers thrown in for some spice! Also, what would happen if Wei Ying was a little less self-sacrificial for once
The Yiling Wei Sect and the Black Robed Lan by IvoryDragon48 [Ongoing]
A canon divergence where Wei Wuxian didn’t die and instead closed the Burial Mounds to outsiders with a barrier. Lan Wangji was still punished with 33 lashes but disappeared soon after. Now, 13 years later, Nie Mingjue invites the Yiling Wei sect to the Discussion Conference and when they arrive the other Sects are surprised to see Lan Wangji standing beside Wei Wuxian and wearing the black and red robes of the Yiling Wei Sect, instead of his white Lan robes, his Lan forehead ribbon nowhere to be seen. How with the cultivation world handle this power couple and their children?
Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are badass and create a sect then surprise everyone at a cultivation conference with that fact. Also sentient burial mounds (you’ll find that’s a theme, whoops)
Love Like You by HisRedEmpress [Ongoing]
Wei Wuxian is spoiled, much more than jiejie's betrothed, Jin Zixuan. The difference between the two is Jin Zixuan is arrogant about it, while Wei Wuxian is oblivious to the boundless extent he can get away with everything he does.
Jiang Cheng is so thankful Wei Wuxian sees him and jiejie as his family.
With that, Jiang Cheng can be assured that if Wei Wuxian decides he wants to have the world, he and jiejie will sparingly be safe when his Supreme Ghost King father and Heavenly Martial Emperor father, not to mention his other Ghost King uncle and grandfather, heavenly official uncles and aunts plus wrath level ghost uncles and aunts, would turn heaven and earth upside down just to give him what he wants.
(or the one where baby Wei Ying is adopted by Hualian)
Yes, the obligatory Hualian adopt Wei Ying fics are back! What else am I supposed to do except browse through that tag on AO3? I love this one because Wei Ying gets all the love he dearly deserved as a child.
To Be Named by Suibian_613 [Ongoing]
During the war, Jin Guanshan knew he was safe from Wen Ruohan because of their close relationship, so when the man died, it was only normal for him to ascend to the top of the four sects, right?
Everything was planned. Wei Wuxian was dead— which, truly a pity, but it was bound to happen either way— and everyone was bending quite easily to his whims.
He just wasn’t expecting one thing.
The Burial Mounds was sentient, and it wasn’t very happy Lanling Jin killed it’s child.
Burial Mounds is not happy that nasty cultivators killed their favourite child :( I love pretty much any fics with sentient burial mounds in it and I am trying to convince everyone else to love them as well!
Heaven Has No Rage by flipfloppandas [Completed]
Yu Ziyuan was not even supposed to answer that early morning call. It was meant for A-Li, for anyone else, really, that wasn’t her. She knew that she was the wrong one to be here with him. That would not stop her from doing what she had to do, from being the person he needed her to be.
Wei Wuxian is sexually assaulted. During the examination that follows, Yu Ziyuan learns more about him. She learns more about herself as well.
WARNING: GRAPHIC RAPE/SEXUAL ASSAULT AFTERMATH! Extremely Madam Yu-centric, this is a very introspective modern AU with very dark themes. Please proceed with caution!
All of my recs can be found in my bookmarks on AO3!

Objective Complete - Now What?
Finally - the epilogue I promised for my Breath of the Wild AU, 'Main Objective : Destroy Yiling Laozu'! This is about 8k words comprised of 6 vignettes showing some of the immediate and long-term outcomes of the main fic. (If anyone wants to skip ahead to the part where Jin Guangshan gets what's coming to him to read first, it's section 5. Check the tags for little hints about what each section is.)
I've had so much fun writing in this world and I plan to continue with it for a little longer, but now I've also got at least one other Zelda-inspired project churning away in the back of my mind so. Time will tell what happens with that.
But for now - enjoy!
--
Lan Jingyi watches Hanguang-Jun and Wei-qianbei descend the mountain with a breathless type of wonder. They look like something from the legends of past heroes, the very embodiment of the gods (Hanguang-Jun) and the stunning, valiant hero (Wei-qianbei) who gives everything he has to save the world (and his true love) from utter destruction. Where’s Ouyang Zizhen when he needs him?! Someone needs to immortalize the image of the two of them descending along with the morning light creeping down the mountain. Plus it’s not like he can get away with waxing poetic about them to his current audience, and that’s kind of Ouyang Zizhen’s thing anyway.
Ah well. They’re incredible, that’s the real takeaway from this whole ‘Yiling Laozu’ mess. And sure, Lan Jingyi may be having trouble processing the fact that after a century of fear they’re all finally free, but the point still stands!
“Wangji looks well,” Lan-xiansheng says quietly in an aside to Zewu-Jun, which - that’s an entirely different epic tale, the way Lan Qiren had swept back into Cloud Recesses long after everyone thought him dead after his seclusion in the sentient, resentment-poisoned Burial Mounds, as hale and hearty as ever. What is it with the main Lan bloodline and their tendency to be extremely sweeping and dramatic when Lan Jingyi has no one around to gush about his heroes with?! And why does someone as awkward and bumbling as him have to be related to these people! No fair.
“He does. I am relieved they have both survived,” Zewu-Jun admits, an uncertainty he likely wouldn’t openly share outside of the present company. “I was..not entirely confident in Wei Wuxian’s ability to conquer his own creation.”
Yeah, definitely not the type of stuff they’d talk about in front of anyone but each other. Well the other Sect leaders, of course, since this was a joint effort they all started way back when, but that’s it. No one else has known - or will ever have reason to know - that the terrifying Yiling Laozu is also the man they’d all decided would be their savior. Of course the Yiling Laozu has always been little more than a story to Lan Jingyi ever since his childhood, but he supposes that if he’d been old enough to see Wei Wuxian at the height of his power he’d find it just as touchy a subject as the Sunshot Immortals do (some more than others).
They wait in silence as the pair finish descending the ancestral mountain, the pair of them so elegant beside each other that Lan Jingyi nearly swoons. And then Wei Wuxian actually does swoon, and the illusion is shattered as Hanguang-Jun goes smoothly to his knees to catch his soulmate in his arms.
“Hanguang-Jun!! Wei-qianbei?!” Lan Jingyi frets as he approaches, Sizhui keeping in perfect step with him with Zewu-Jun and Lan-Xiansheng not far behind.
“What happened?” Lan Jingyi asks.
Lan Sizhui worries, “Is he injured?”
“Wangji?” Lan-xiansheng tries, concern poorly concealed behind his usual stern demeanor.
“He is tired,” Hanguang-Jun replies implacably, something so tender and fond in his voice and his eyes that it feels wrong to witness it. “Let him rest.”
“Bring him home, then,” Zewu-Jun says softly. Lan Sizhui kneels beside his father to press a hand to Wei-qianbei’s forehead as if to check his status himself, which Hanguang-Jun allows without hesitation. “We have all earned the chance to rest well.”
Lan Jingyi looks up from his own anxious study of Wei-qianbei’s lax features to find Zewu-Jun and Lan-xiansheng both looking at him. There had been a time, before the end of everything as they knew it, that Lan Jingyi had spent his time equally between their homes when he wasn’t in the children’s house being cared for. Sizhui had joined Hanguang-Jun in his seclusion to be raised by him as soon as he was well enough to do so, but no one had been able to take in Lan Jingyi, another war orphan of the main bloodline.
But Lan Xichen and Lan Qiren hadn’t let him be forgotten about, either. They’d made sure to ask after his studies, to have tea with him once a week either separately or together, whatever their schedules permitted. It had been Lan-xiansheng to watch over all his punishments for his wild nature, which meant that it had been Lan-xiansheng who had always snuck him into the kitchens afterwards to give him one of the candies they kept a secret stock of for visiting Sect Leaders. It had been Lan Xichen who had taught him how to channel his restless energy into something productive. It had been both of them who had taught him, in their own quiet ways, that his differences were to be honed and celebrated, and had lifted him to the rank of head disciple before their duties had called them away.
It’s been so long since Lan Jingyi has gotten a chance to see the inner Clan as anything besides their larger-than-life legendary selves that he’d nearly forgotten that this little valley between two mountains contains his entire family as he knows it.
“You’ve all grown up so much,” Zewu-Jun says with something like bittersweetness in his eyes. “Would you still take tea with your humble uncle no matter how old you’ve become?”
Lan Jingyi nods through tears and doesn’t think twice about stepping forward to throw his arms first around Zewu-Jun’s shoulders and then Lan-xiansheng’s. They both hold him like they wish they didn’t have to let go so soon, but Wei Wuxian needs tending to, and the news of his and Hanguang-Jun’s triumph needs to be spread far and wide as soon as possible.
Hanguang-Jun gets Wei-qianbei settled in his arms and leads the way back into Cloud Recesses, the rest of the Lan inner clan at his back in silent, unending support. It feels surreal, Lan Jingyi thinks, to look ahead and see Hanguang-Jun’s proud shoulders as they fly over the mountains that ring their home. To feel Zewu-Jun’s blazing presence at his left and Lan-xiansheng’s immovable steadiness at his right. Sizhui turns his head to grin at him over his shoulder, the truth of their victory finally sinking in, and no one says a word of complaint as Lan Jingyi whoops into the wind, his triumphant laughter preceding them into the Cloud Recesses on gilded wings.
They did it, he thinks giddily as they alight in the main courtyard, bustling with disciples eager to hear the news they can already feel in their cores. They really did it.

“And it’s definitely gone?” Jiang Wanyin demands.
“Taken care of.”
“Wangji-“ Lan Xichen sighs and pinches at the bridge of his nose as his little brother looks on, utterly indifferent to the headache this threatens to give him. “You are evading the question,” he sighs again and Lan Wangji looks utterly unrepentant.
“Let it go,” Nie Mingjue rumbles from behind him, a hand sliding up somewhat inappropriately for public to rest on his shoulder. It takes everything in Lan Xichen not to sink back into his partner’s broad chest, so inviting at the best of times but especially after not having seen him for such an unfathomably long time. “We’ve done what we set out to do. It’s over now, that’s what matters.”
“If he starts causing problems again I’ll just kick his ass straight back to hell where he belongs anyway. Probably can’t be resurrected twice no matter how tenacious he is,” Jiang Wanyin opines, brows drawn so low and tight it’s a wonder the wrinkle between them isn’t yet a permanent divot in his forehead.
“I do not believe that threat is as effective as you would like it to be,” Jin Guangyao says with a smile and Lan Xichen can’t help but smile along with him, perhaps a little dopily. (It’s just so lovely to see the dozens of barely-there expressions that go with the same sort of politely venomous commentary he’s been maintaining through their four-way bond for so many years, he can’t help himself). Jiang Wanyin, for his part, sneers and gives a sharp tsk before he turns his head to look sharply out the window at the rejuvenated Cloud Recesses.
“Does he still have the ability to summon us at will?” he asks after a silent moment and all eyes return to Lan Wangji, seated as comfortably behind his desk as if he’d never even left.
“You no longer pilot your Divine Beasts,” he says simply, tone measured and even. “Wei Ying is not strong enough or willing to take what is not freely given; As you no longer offer your energy to me, he cannot summon you. Our link to the four of you is forever broken.”
Three sets of shoulders loosen, and it is unsurprisingly Jiang Wanyin who somehow finds a reason to grow even more tightly wound. Having spent the better part of a century linked with his spirit, Lan Xichen feels he’s in something of a position to understand his concerns, though he’s tactful enough not to mention it.
“If you want him to talk to you that badly then just go talk to him,” Nie Mingjue says bluntly, with none of the tact or patience that Lan Xichen is currently employing. “We didn’t spend all this time and energy fixing him and getting him back just for you to keep being so upset over killing him in the first place that you can’t even bring yourself to look at him.”
“Elegant, da-ge,” Jin Guangyao mutters sarcastically just low enough for only his partners to hear.
“Wei Ying and I will leave soon,” Lan Wangji suddenly says with an icy glare at Jiang Wanyin. And then Lan Xichen can only watch with fond exasperation as his brother stands and departs with a snap of his sleeves and without another word, his meaning clear perhaps only to the one man in the room who learned to read him practically from the day he was born.
“I believe that is our cue to depart to our own destinations as well,” Lan Xichen says in the wake of Lan Wangji’s exit, his perpetual smile on his lips.
“Where are you three going?” Jiang Wanyin asks with a wary glance first at Nie Mingjue’s hand still on Lan Xichen’s shoulder and then at Jin Guangyao’s fingers threaded through Nie Mingjue’s on his other side.
“Haven’t decided yet,” Nie Mingjue shrugs, unbothered. “How are you going to celebrate finally getting out of our heads?”
“I am going to go very very far away where no one can hear me scream,” he deadpans, and Lan Xichen has to laugh. He loves these men - deeply, ardently, steadfastly - and he looks forward to a future spent in the certainty of pleasure in each other’s company, wherever their paths may happen to meet.
Once upon a time it would have been their duties to stay, to lead, to sacrifice. Now…the younger generation has been in their places so long that most of the world doesn’t even remember the time when they led their people as anything other than stories of a time gone by. It’s time for them to fade comfortably into legend, and Lan Xichen can’t say he cares at all where they go save that they do it with the understanding that they’ll find each other again.
He fixes Jiang Wanyin with another smile and says, “We will travel then, and should you miss us, you know how to find us.”
Jiang Wanyin studies them all for a moment before he huffs a sigh and turns his head to glare out at Cloud Recesses again. “I just had all three of you flirting with each other in my head for a disgustingly long time. Give it another several decades at least and then I might be able to stomach a cup of tea with you. If you show up at Lotus Pier before then I’ll break your legs.”
He leaves without another word. Lan Xichen decides on one more moment of grace and doesn’t call out a comment that they can see him heading straight for the Jingshi - and its adjoining guest house that has become Wei Wuxian’s workspace since he woke a week ago.
“Where to?” Jin Guangyao asks softly once they’re alone. Lan Xichen smiles at both of his partners when Nie Mingjue raises Jin Guangyao’s hand to his lips to press a kiss to his knuckles.
“The ocean?” Lan Xichen suggests wistfully, and without a word needing to be spoken he knows his partners will agree.
--
“Wei Wuxian!” Jiang Cheng barks as he storms up to the door of his brother’s - of Wei Wuxian’s stupid demon workshop. Lan Wangji might have everyone else fooled, or at least willing to look the other way, but Jiang Cheng knows Wei Wuxian, and he knows that there’s no way he’d give up anything useful once he had it. He’d invented demonic cultivation, if anyone was thinking he wouldn’t pick it right back up again at the earliest opportunity then the more fools they. He wouldn’t be caught with the wool pulled over his eyes, at least, even if everyone else was determined to be an idiot about it.
And he knows that despite what he’d said back at Lotus Pier (despite the lies he’d told, the ways he’d hurt Jiang Cheng again), that Wei Wuxian remembers. And he knows that Chenqing disappeared from the Lotus Pier treasure vault when Wei Wuxian departed for Lanling. (He will never admit even under pain of death that he’s the one who loosened the security on it in the name of having more hands on deck for the relocation effort.)
Jiang Cheng pounds on the door with his fist, teeth grinding hard enough to make his head ache, and he doesn’t stop until the door glides open with a sharp clack against its frame.
And the breath is punched out of his lungs with one look into wide, dark eyes.
“Wen-guniang,” he manages around whatever rock has lodged itself in his chest. “You’re-“ Jiang Cheng cuts off, slightly strangled, when Wen Qing raises one graceful hand to her neck, spiderwebbed with black veins that belie her…condition.
“Wei Wuxian is speaking with Lan Sizhui and the elders,” she says coolly, an icy balm on his frayed nerves. He’s as helpless under the sharpness of her eyes as he has ever been. “You should wait for him in the Jingshi.”
“I -” he starts, unsure how he’s supposed to finish that sentence. Unsure if he should. A dozen questions crowd to the tip of his tongue, push at his grinding teeth as if they’ll burst from him if he doesn’t keep his jaw locked. Wen Qing - impossibly alive (well. Sort of.) - stares at him impassively, her chin still tipped up proudly in the way he’d always admired.
Loved.
“You’re here,” he finally manages. He hopes she can hear it in his voice that he doesn’t just mean here, in Cloud Recesses, but rather here in the world, still walking among the living. Still fixing the world with that impassive and imperious gaze, as sharp and commanding as his own.
“I’m here,” she agrees, uncharacteristically quiet. Her chin dips and her eyelashes flutter as her gaze drops to the vicinity of his chest for less than a breath. He can’t remember the last time he wanted to hug somebody so desperately it makes his entire body ache. (That’s not true. He can. But thinking about Jiang Yanli is still too painful, even after all this time. It’s easier not to remember.)
“You-”
“Jiang Cheng!” Jiang Cheng has a nasty retort for his brother ready on the tip of his tongue, his irritation quick to hand. He’s expecting what usually happens with Wen Qing - she’ll make her excuses and leave him staring after her, the gulf between them too wide to cross, too wide to try. He whips around with a snarl already on his lips -
And Wen Qing beats him to it.
“Wei Wuxian! Hanguang-Jun is in the Jingshi, I suggest you join him.”
“But-”
Whatever glare Wen Qing is managing over his shoulder must be intimidating enough because Wei Wuxian’s eyebrows shoot up and he backs up a pace down the path between his home and his workshop, hands raised to his shoulders in a gesture of peace.
“Don’t run off with your Hanguang-Jun before I talk to you, either,” Jiang Cheng snaps, and the tips of his ears flush red when Wei Wuxian grins at him.
“Whatever you say, Sandu Shengshou!” he taunts with a mocking little salute before he flits off into the Jingshi, his happy cry of, “Lan Zhan!!” resounding through the clearing before the door slides shut and activates the silencing talismans.
He turns back to Wen Qing only to find that she’s already stepped into the workroom. Wordlessly, and on numb legs, he follows her and shuts the door quietly behind himself.
Wei Wuxian’s workspace is organized chaos, with talisman papers fluttering on every available surface and shelves along the walls covered in inventions in various stages of being tinkered with. There are lure flags and sketches of arrays and talismans that he’s sure are meant for all manner of things that will be useful for cultivators and commoners alike, because he knows his brother and that’s just who he is.
Jiang Cheng has eyes for none of it.
Wen Qing stands perfectly poised in the center of the room, her expression tight and haughty, nearly cool enough to hide the fear in her eyes, but not quite. Her eyes have always been so expressive, he thinks, and he drifts closer without thinking until they’re once again face-to-face. He knows he’s staring. He should say something. Anything. But he’d never thought to see her face again. After the ways he’s failed her, after the horrors she’s faced, after the way he broke his promises to her and had to stand there and toast to her death to avoid becoming an easy target for other Sects bigger and stronger than the Jiang - he’d never thought to stand face to face with her again.
It suddenly hits him, through the shock of seeing her in the flesh after all this time, that he doesn’t have the right to face her again.
Without a word, he drops first to his knees and then further forward until his forehead is pressed to his hands at her feet, the hem of her skirts swishing across his knuckles as she hurries to jerk a step back.
“Jiang Wanyin!” she snaps, and Jiang Cheng forces down the urge to reach out for her. He keeps his hands to the floor and his face hidden as he tries to order his thoughts.
“Wen-guniang, this humble one begs forgiveness,” he finally manages. He wonders if there’s anyone in the world who would expect him to prostrate himself with full humility before any other soul - but, for him, there’s never been another soul like Wen Qing. “I have wronged you at every turn, and this is a debt I will never be able to repay. Anything you wish of me, whatever it may be, name it. Please -”
“Enough.”
Jiang Cheng falls silent in an instant, lip caught under his teeth and his breathing embarrassingly ragged. He nearly laughs aloud at his own shame - Wen Qing has seen him at his absolute worst, and she tended to him when she had no reason to. He’s seen her at her lowest, and he’d turned his back and left her to be slaughtered. A bit of unsteadiness is the least he has to be ashamed of.
“Jiang-Zongzhu, the great Sandu Shengshou, bowing to a dead woman,” she muses. Jiang Cheng notes the soft rustle of silk as she apparently settles herself in a seat somewhere close by. He still refuses to raise his head from the floor to look. “I take it your opinion on fierce corpses has changed over the last century?”
Jiang Cheng shifts uncomfortably, reminded of the shortsightedness of his youth. Not that he hasn’t gotten an earful about it from the other three that have been knocking around in his head for years, but he hadn’t actually hurt any of them with it.
“..Yes.”
“And demonic cultivation?”
Jiang Cheng grinds his teeth - even after all this time, the concept of it turns his stomach. He’d seen what it did during the war, after all, and in the aftermath of it. He’d seen it turned on innocent villagers and cultivators alike, he’d seen entire villages flattened and the dead wrenched from their graves to be put to work all over again, gruesome and shambling and never allowed to rest. He’d seen it rip his entire family from him, from his infant nephew. He’d seen it be turned and twisted to suit Jin Guangshan’s uses and he’d been powerless to stop it, and then finally he’d seen it sort-of-firsthand through Jin Guangyao’s experiences trapped inside Hensheng, the other three Champions doing their best to keep him sane as his father did everything in his power to drive him mad enough to dispose of.
“I despise it,” he grits out, because he will not lie. “It has torn everything from me, and will continue to be a thorn in my side until the day I finally manage to off myself.”
Wen Qing snorts. “I didn’t ask about Wei Wuxian, I asked about his cultivation.”
Jiang Cheng takes a slow, dragging breath in and finally pushes himself up onto his knees, his chin ducked and hands in his lap though now he can meet Wen Qing’s eyes in an attempt to gauge what she might be thinking. It hasn’t escaped his notice that she’s said nothing of his plea for her forgiveness, though naturally he doesn’t expect to ever receive it.
“I know he can’t -” the words stick in his throat and he works it a few times, swallowing thickly in an attempt to dislodge the stubborn lump that’s made its home there. “I know he had no choice.”
Wen Qing, whether she means to or not, glances down at his chest again and Jiang Cheng presses a hand to his stomach, stiff purple brocade wrinkling a bit beneath the harsh drag of his fingertips.
“You know -”
“Of course I know!” he can’t help but snap, vision swimming. “You think I could live for decades inside a Divine Beast made of his core and not recognize that it’s not even mine?! I knew him better than anybody, how could I not recognize my own brother?!”
Wen Qing’s hands in her lap curl together tightly once and then loosen with what looks like great effort, smoothing down the already-perfect skirt of her robes mechanically. “You believed it back then,” she says softly and it’s like a bucket of cold mountain water dumped on his head. “He died hoping that you would never know.”
“I don’t care what he wants,” Jiang Cheng rasps. “What - you were there? What did you want?”
Wen Qing meets his gaze again, her chin once again held high and her eyes flashing with that determination he’s always been so drawn to. “You deserved to know. I did what he asked because I owed him a debt, and he was desperate. I did what I had to to help him. But I always thought you deserved to know what he did for you.”
Jiang Cheng can’t help but scoff and scrub at his face, suddenly exhausted. “Who should bother with debts after a century? We owe each other more than could be repaid in three lifetimes. I’ve stopped keeping score.”
When he drops his hands to his lap again Wen Qing is still looking at him, and Jiang Cheng resists the urge to squirm. He’s a Sect Leader, he’s a Champion, he’s his mother’s son. He doesn’t squirm, and yet he isn’t sure how else to classify the shivery feeling in his chest, the tension in his thighs or the way his hands are itching to curl into fists in his skirts.
“The Lan have promised my brother and I safe haven until Jin Guangshan is deposed.”
Jiang Cheng blinks at the seeming non-sequitur.
“Where will you go then?”
Wen Qing meets his eyes levelly, and yet Jiang Cheng can sense a hesitance in the squaring of her shoulders.
“I have spent a century waiting for Wei Wuxian to return and hiding from every living soul. That question is even more difficult to answer than when I was alive.”
Jiang Cheng ducks his head to attempt to hide the way his ears are burning once again. With shame, with embarrassment, it doesn’t matter. He looks at Wen Qing and he remembers what it was like to be a teenager in the grips of his first (and only) love. Even after all this time. Even now.
“I have failed to protect you,” he says, low and quiet. “I have broken promises to you. I have stood by when every desire in me screamed for me to take action. I have no right to ask you for anything at all, but..Lotus Pier is open to you. Anytime you wish, for any purpose.”
“And if I wish to kill you for what you’ve put me and my family through?”
Jiang Cheng takes a deep breath and then stands, taking a few steps forward as he draws Sandu from his sheath. Wen Qing’s eyes dart to the blade and then, widened, meet his eyes again. Jiang Cheng stops when he’s close enough and drops to his knees again to offer her the sword on his palms. His hands are steady as he holds his sword out to her, his gaze unwavering. If there’s anyone in this world, he thinks, who deserves to take his life, it’s the woman kneeling before him. He wouldn’t even flinch so long as it was her holding the blade to his throat.
“I could make it hurt,” she says as she reaches for the handle. “I could keep you alive for days longer than I should, I could make you feel every minute of it, I could keep you aware when all you want to do is black out and never feel again. I would have every reason to. You would hand me your sword, just like that?”
“Just like that,” Jiang Cheng agrees. Wen Qing’s fingers brush his palm, ice cold, but Jiang Cheng doesn’t even flinch. There had been a time, of course, when even that faint brush of skin would have been untenable. Now, he finds he’s only glad for it, as it means Wen Qing is here, in the present, in the flesh, deciding what fate he deserves for all the ways he’s failed her in their past.
She takes Sandu, and Jiang Cheng returns his hands to his lap as he watches her examine the blade, the handle, the pommel with its little frog. Something like a smile crosses her pale lips.
“I’m a doctor, Jiang Wanyin,” she says as she turns the blade around, points the tip straight at him. “I know every way there is to cut a man apart and stitch him back together so that I may do it all over again.” She slides the blade home in its sheath at his side, leaning towards him to do so. Their eyes meet over the reduced distance between them, the air as charged as if he had woken the Zidian on his wrist. “But luckily for you, I only heal. When it’s safe for me to walk freely in the world, I’ll come to you in Yunmeng, and I’ll see what Lotus Pier has that I may make use of.”
Jiang Cheng looks between her eyes for a long moment crackling with tension. His eyes catch on an errant strand of hair at her temple, and before he can think better of it he reaches into the fold of his robe to withdraw the token he’d begun carrying so many years ago. Wen Qing’s eyes widen when she glances down to see what he has, but she doesn’t move as he slowly - slowly - unwraps the cloth and reaches up to slide the comb into her hair. He catches the stray lock and carefully secures it in place, and only when he’s satisfied with the integrity of its hold does he withdraw his hand. He folds the cloth the comb has been wrapped in, reaches out to catch her empty hand, and presses the square of silk into her palm.
“Present this comb at the gates, should you decide to come,” he murmurs as he meets her pained gaze. “You will always be safe at Lotus Pier.”
“Jiang Wanyin -“
Jiang Cheng dips into another kowtow - but this time he lets her pull him up and out of it again. Once upright, he freezes in shock to feel her collapse against his chest, her arms wound tightly around his waist. He blinks at the wall of Wei Wuxian’s workspace and holds his arms out far enough not to touch, afraid of being improper. But when Wen Qing makes a noise in the back of her throat and begins to withdraw, Jiang Cheng can’t keep himself from holding onto her as tightly as he can, bundling her against him and tucking himself around her.
“I’m sorry I didn’t help you when you needed it most,” he says into her hair. “I’m sorry it’s taken so long to tell you.”
Wen Qing doesn’t reply. Instead, she tucks her ice-cold face into the crook of his neck and Jiang Cheng closes his eyes against the world to focus on how it feels to know he’s gotten a second chance he never could have dreamt of, never could have asked for.
They can’t stay there forever, and when Wei Wuxian finally loses his patience and comes to interrupt them Jiang Cheng puts him in a headlock and jostles him enough to feel satisfied for the moment. But he can feel Wen Qing watching on, silent and steady at his back (well, silent until she begins chastising Wei Wuxian), and he can begin to hope that he won’t be the only one left to return to a life alone when all of this is said and done.

“Wei Ying.”
Lan Zhan watches his husband look up from where he’s scribbling out one last round of talismans to hand off to the disciples before they leave Cloud Recesses in the morning. He’s rumpled around the edges, his ponytail a little sloppy with a single piece falling loose to caress his cheek and tickle the exposed arch of his collarbone where his robes have fallen askew with all of his gesturing throughout the day.
“What is it, Lan Zhan?” Wei Ying asks with a tilt of his head and a gentle smile, the kind that crinkles the corners of his eyes ever so slightly. Lan Zhan loves him so much sometimes it feels like he’ll split apart into a billion pinpricks of light, his mortal form too small and weak to carry the boundless adoration he feels for this improbable, impossible man.
“I have something to tell you.”
“Ah? Alright, go ahead then,” he allows with some bemusement. He sets aside his brush and runs his long fingers through his hair to scrape his ponytail back into some semblance of order. Lan Zhan watches him for a moment before he takes a deep breath in -
And is interrupted by a knock at the door.
“Hanguang-Jun, Wei-qianbei?” A-Yuan calls through the door, though Lan Zhan had recognized him from his gentle knock alone.
“Hold on, Lan Zhan, he must be here to pick up the talismans,” Wei Ying says as he scrambles gracelessly to his feet and then manages to make the short walk to the door look seamless and graceful as a dance - how he manages to seem both gangly and elegant nearly simultaneously, Lan Zhan is pretty sure he’ll never know. Wei Ying throws the door wide with a grin and a boisterous, “Xiao-Zongzhu!!” that makes A-Yuan laugh in that soft way he picked up from his Uncle Xichen.
“Hello Wei-gongzi,” A-Yuan replies good naturedly. He steps inside to offer them both little bows, uncertainty in his eyes - Lan Zhan has never requested formality from him in their home, but Wei Ying’s new presence does leave some questions about how best to proceed. Perhaps it’s better, then, that both his husband and his son are going to be present for this long-overdue confession.
“Wei Ying. Sizhui,” Lan Zhan says as he rises to his feet in a graceful sweep of his robes. “There is something I must share with you both.” He gestures to the table and turns to retrieve a third teacup from the shelf near the hearth as the others settle themselves where he directed, matching expressions of confusion on their faces.
“Before Wei Ying and I leave for our travels, there is something that I believe it is important you know,” he begins as he pours tea - first for their son, and then for his husband, and finally for himself. “Sizhui, do you remember what I told you once, long ago, when you were a boy and you asked me why you only had a father?”
Wei Ying blinks owlishly, clearly surprised, but he dutifully doesn’t interrupt, merely turns his head to watch A-Yuan cast his mind back nearly a century into the past to dredge up the memory.
“Yes,” he finally says slowly, puzzled. “You said that I had been loved dearly by the people who raised me, but that my birth parents had been lost to the Sunshot Campaign, and that I alone survived a battle in my village during the Scourge of the Yiling Laozu.”
“Lan Zhan, you said all that to a child?!” Wei Ying whispers, scandalized.
“Sizhui labored under a grief he could feel but could not remember the reason for,” Lan Zhan replies, unperturbed. “As his adoptive father, I felt it important not to lie, in the case that it would make his grief even harder to bear.”
Lan watches Wei Ying mouth the words ‘adoptive father’ to himself and understanding light his features in the following moment - it’s true that Lan Sizhui is a very clear product of Lan Zhan’s parenting, for anyone with the eyes to see it, and Wei Ying knows him better than anyone else in the world. Of course he can see it in their son with only a little nudge.
“Hanguang-Jun…I’ve had a lot of time these decades to try to remember my past.” A-Yuan hesitates, his eyes flickering back and forth between the two older men with increasing urgency. “I still can’t remember much, but…Lan-xiansheng has described the Burial Mounds to me since his return from seclusion. It was like I was being told something I’ve dreamt in the past and forgotten until I was reminded. And I’ve met with Wen Qing and Wen Ning. They say I look like someone who was once their cousin.”
Lan Zhan nods in encouragement, and meets Wei Ying’s eyes with a significant look. After so many years in utter seclusion, talking is difficult, but Wei Ying understands him as no one else can. All it takes is a look from him and another nod when Wei Ying points between his own chest and A-Yuan’s for realization to bloom across his features. It’s followed quickly by the shine of tears in his eyes, though Lan Zhan is sure that he doesn’t have to be alarmed by them.
“A-Yuan?” Wei Ying asks with a tremble in his voice. “Lan Zhan, did you save A-Yuan?”
“This is what I needed to tell you,” Lan Zhan replies calmly. He reaches a hand out to rest on Wei Ying’s back beside him as the man leans forward to hide his face in his hands. Lan Zhan meets their son’s eyes to find his are equally tear-shiny and just as full of understanding.
“I thought – at first, maybe not?...but - Xian-gege?”
The name is like a bolt of lightning; Wei Ying is up and on his feet to pull A-Yuan to his in the blink of an eye, and then they’re clutching onto each other with every ounce of their considerable strengths. Lan Zhan stands as well to rest a hand on his son’s head as the man buries his face in Wei Ying’s shoulder, his hands curled into fists in the back of his robes as he sniffles.
“Xian-gege, I missed you!” he finally cries, and Wei Ying laughs through his tears.
“Silly boy, my little radish,” he chastises fondly enough that Lan Zhan can only smile a little more widely, a little more tenderly. “Didn’t you know I’d always come back for you? Hm?”
Wei Ying looks up at Lan Zhan next, and his gaze is full of so much joy that it steals Lan Zhan’s breath away. What can he do except allow Wei Ying to pull him into the embrace? What could he possibly do besides wrap his son and his husband in his arms and hold them so tightly they both squeak and start laughing in protest even as they snuggle in closer?
Against all odds, the three of them have survived to be here in this moment together, and as Lan Zhan’s contented sigh ruffles both of their hair he can’t help but think that maybe it was all worth it, in the end, to know that they can all have this for the rest of their unending lives.
They’ve more than earned it.
--
“May I request that the record show I asked to see the ocean?” Lan Xichen says politely from his left.
“Hey, I came out of my well-deserved retirement for this because Lan Zhan said I had to. I think I win this one.”
“Gentlemen,” Jin Guangyao cuts in with a nasty smile that Jin Guangshan will never acknowledge is a mirror of his own. “We are on something of a timetable. Specifically that of the guards, as they will be returning to their posts in less than a shichen. May I suggest we finish our task quickly so they can clean up the mess they will find and get on with their lives?”
Jin Guangshan’s upper lip curls back over his teeth in a mixture of disgust and a threat when Nie Mingjue steps in front of him, Jiang Wanyin’s fist in his hair forcing him to tip his head back and look up at the oldest Nie brat. They’re all brats, but especially his own ungrateful bastard who never fully learned how to settle for his rightful place in life.
“Which one of you is going to have the honor of failing to murder an immortal?” Jin Guangshan sneers through swollen lips - Nie Mingjue may be a brat but he packs a harder punch than any other physical blow Jin Guangshan has had to deal with since the boy’s equally-violent father died.
“Ooo you think you’re special just because you cultivated to immortality?” that fucking Wei Wuxian taunts, so Jin Guangshan turns his sneer on him standing at Lan Wangji’s side like his pathetic little guard dog. He doesn’t bother attempting to meet Lan Wangji’s glare - the icy hatred that burns in his eyes has been putting Jin Guangshan’s hackles up for long enough that he doesn’t even bother giving the boy a glance anymore. “Lan Zhan, is there any reason we can’t kill the great and powerful Jin Guangshan just because he’s immortal?”
“No difference,” Lan Wangji replies stoically. Jin Guangshan scoffs.
“ ‘No difference’? Murdering a man in cold blood is no different from killing anything else, is it? You’ve all been so corrupted by Wei Wuxian’s demons that you can’t even recognize good from evil anymore. You all disgust me, traitors that you are!”
“Okay that’s enough out of you,” Jiang Wanyin snaps. Between one breath and the next, Jin Guangshan’s mouth fills with something hot in the split second before an agony like he’s never felt before screams through his head. His severed tongue flops bloody and limp to the floor in front of him as more blood pours out of his ruined mouth to stain his golden lap crimson. He manages to scream an inarticulate noise of rage and pain before he finds his lips sealed together and he’s forced to swallow the blood still pouring from the ruined root of his tongue.
“Ooh nice one, Lan-da-ge,” Wei Wuxian praises. “And Jiang Cheng! Who knew you were so good with the Yu hidden blades – you’ve been holding out on your old shixiong!”
“This isn’t fucking - I’m not your shidi anymore!” Jiang Cheng blusters as he wipes his sullied blade off on Jin Guangshan’s shoulder. “Stop praising me and just get to the point!”
“There’s something you should know about the bonds between the Champions,” Nie Mingjue cuts them off, as businesslike as if delivering a field report. Jin Guangshan glares up at him with as much hatred as he can muster while he diverts the qi in his golden core to healing his truncated tongue in the hopes of at least stopping the blood pouring down his throat. “We’ve felt everything you’ve done to A-Yao, and not only the hell you’ve put him through since we all boarded our Beasts.
“Every slap. Every blow. Every thrown dish, every snide remark. Every cold shoulder and every threat you’ve made to turn him into your pawn - we’ve seen it. We’ve felt the memory of his ribs breaking and his head hitting the stone when you kicked him down the stairs of your precious tower before he ever even came to me in Qinghe, and we’ve borne witness to every atrocity you’ve committed under the cover of the growing chaos of the Yin Amulet’s power. Each filthy deed, secret, and act of violence great or small that A-Yao has been privy to, we have been as well. There’s nothing left for you to do except hold onto the useless hope that this will be over for you quickly.”
Jin Guangshan is not a fearful man. He’s been the sole master of the cultivation world for more than a century. He’s been a puppeteer making everyone else dance and do his bidding since the time he was a child raised in the indulgent opulence of Jinlintai. He’s never truly had reason to be afraid.
But with Nie Mingjue towering over him with cold, calculating judgement in his eyes; with Jiang Wanyin at his back bristling with his infamous temper and the weapons he’s learned to wield with fatal precision over the last century; with the righteous Twin Jades of Lan looking upon his violent demise without flinching; with his own son wielding the haughty arrogance of his bloodline as easily as he wields the soft sword gifted to him by Wen Ruohan; and with Wei Wuxian overseeing it all with utterly callous disregard and frivolity, as if out for nothing more strenuous than a stroll through the peony gardens, Jin Guangshan feels himself go cold all over with the understanding that immortal or no, this is where he will die.
“Good speech Nie-da-ge, I think he’s starting to get the picture,” Wei Wuxian smirks, twirling that damned demonic flute between his knuckles. “We’ve got a special treat for you, by the way. A little bit of mopping up left to do before we all finally go our separate ways.”
Wei Wuxian snaps his fingers in the same moment Lan Wangji raises the hand not holding Wei Wuxian to his side - and Jin Guangshan’s eyes widen when he spots one half of the infamous Tiger Amulet floating lazily above the famed Hanguang-Jun’s open palm. The other is floating identically above Wei Wuxian’s free hand opposite, and as Jin Guangshan watches on in dawning horror they coax the pieces together with an earsplitting crack to complete the amulet.
Jin Guangshan is instantly caught in throes of agony, dropped onto his front and writhing against the ropes of qi suppressing and containing him as he fights to break free of the spirits that have come to torment him. Through the haze of it all he dimly recognizes the audience to his death, all six of them standing and watching as the spirits begin tearing into his flesh with bloodied claws.
A sharp whistle cuts through the noise, adding a new layer of sharp pain to his suffering. Within moments, there’s something besides spirits yanking and ripping into him - a dead, decayed, ice-cold hand is trying to shove its way into his screaming mouth and Jin Guangshan opens his eyes to find Xue Yang grinning ghoulishly down at him, high pitched giggling pouring incessantly from behind his bared, gnashing teeth. He meets Xue Yang’s eyes and is shocked to find that instead of the black abyss his eyes had been under the influence of the mind-control Nails, Xue Yang’s eyes are instead his own again, and full of a manic but almost childish glee.
“Jin Guangshan,” Lan Xichen says somberly from somewhere overhead, barely audible over Jin Guangshan’s screams and the manic racket Xue Yang is making. “Your crimes have been testified and borne witness of before a combined council of every living current and former Sect Leader your actions have affected, Great and Minor, including your grandson and successor Jin Rulan. After a lengthy deliberation, the council decreed that the four Divine Champions, Hanguang-Jun, and the Hero of Time Wei Wuxian would determine your punishment for the crimes you have committed. We, as your arbiters, have decided you will die by the hand of your own creations, tormented in return by the spirits you have tortured and trapped beneath Jinlintai throughout the last 100 years.”
“Xue Yang can have his final revenge, and when he’s finished I’ll lay everybody to rest,” Wei Wuxian says. The Champions fall back until they’re flanking Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian with their arms crossed over their chests. Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian together hold the completed Tiger Seal like it’s nothing at all.
Jin Guangshan loses sight of them after that, but even through the agony of being torn to shreds and his immortal qi devoured at a pace that he can’t possibly combat he can feel them there, watching, judging. The weight of their presence holds him pinned to the floor as surely as Xue Yang’s rotting weight does. In the final moments before decaying fingers crawl and mash their way into his eye sockets, Jin Guangshan finds his bastard son’s cold, calculating gaze, and is unsurprised to find nothing in it at all but vindictive pleasure. He’d shoved that boy down as far into the earth as possible for a reason, and to know that all his efforts have been for nothing still somehow manages to rankle, even in his current condition.
He dies shortly after that, though from what exactly it’s difficult to say. The ghosts summoned to torture him are glutted on his qi, enough to have sustained him for uncountable years had he been allowed to continue as he was. Jin Guangshan steps back from the bloody lumps that are all that remain of his body and upon which Xue Yang is still gnawing, and when he looks up it’s to find his murderers all staring straight at him.
“Jin Guangshan, your punishment is complete. Time to go to sleep.”
Wei Wuxian’s voice in life hadn’t sounded like anything special at all that Jin Guangshan can remember. But now that Jin Guangshan is nothing more than a spectre on the spiritual plane, the Yiling Laozu’s voice rings like a gong, a death knell that shakes through him and drags him down to his knees. He goes - he can’t disobey no matter how much he might wish to - and he feels the others kneel as well, an entire legion of angry spirits ringing him right there in the throne room of Jinlintai.
He watches in silence with dawning horror as Wei Wuxian raises his flute to his lips, and in Jin Guangshan’s new ghostly sight it looks like a black hole cradled in the man’s hands, a complete absence of anything living. It radiates a fierce cold that manages to freeze him to his core despite having no physical senses anymore, and when Wei Ying blows the first note the spirits contained within the flute unfurl their supernaturally long limbs to stand guard in front of their master. Jin Guangshan stares up at them in their silent attention, eyes glowing red in their twisted faces, and he finally understands just what sort of power it is Wei Wuxian truly wields.
Reports from the Jin cultivators at the final battle to conquer Wen Ruohan had said that Wei Wuxian claimed to have come from hell. Now, looking up at him from his knees as a spectral wind begins to tear away pieces of his very soul to be scattered far and wide, Jin Guangshan realizes that the boy had spoken nothing but the unvarnished truth. The Champions, Hanguang-Jun (a glowing beacon of golden light true to his name, in this strange plane), and the four great Demons under the Yiling Laozu’s command all watch on in silence as Jin Guangshan is destroyed so thoroughly that he will never again be able to enter the cycle.
And then, at long last, there is nothing left of him to see.
--
The people are prospering.
Wei Ying looks out over the once-barren expanse of the Burial Mounds and knows that it’s likely only he can still spot the bones of what it once was beneath the lush greenery that sprung up in the wake of his and Lan Zhan’s final triumph. They’d wandered the world for a while, content to exist only to each other and to flit in and out of their loved one’s lives as the fates saw fit to bring them together. But this place, such a deeply-rooted piece of Wei Ying’s soul, had called and called to him no matter how happy he was elsewhere. Not literally - the spirits are pretty quiet for him these days - but he just couldn’t resist the lure of it, his lonely mountain.
When they’d climbed it, it was to find that it had become a teeming, thriving garden, wild and untamed and bursting with life where it had once been nothing at all. It was a miracle, and he and Lan Zhan had decided nearly without it needing to be said that they would make their final home here.
Now, so many decades later they’ve truly faded out of common memory as real people, they share the joy of running a Sect of their very own as they’d always dreamt, full of humble homes and people who find joy in a simple life on the mountain, and in serving the common people who live below it.
In opposition to the simple cottages that make up their Sect, a great white temple soars towards the heavens where the Demon Subdue Palace once crumbled. Within it, shielded and warded behind heavy doors and layer after layer of air-tight arrays, lie the two halves of the Tiger Amulet held permanently apart from each other by Chenqing between them. His tools had served him well during their travels through the world to put it back to rights, but now that Wei Ying has long-since cultivated his core to match Lan Zhan’s he has no need of them anymore (and he truly believes that the spirits he’d trapped within the tools deserve their own much needed rest anyway).
Outside of their mountain, the world goes on peacefully, enjoying a time of prosperity and equality that hasn’t been seen in centuries, if ever. The seasons change, the world turns, people come and go. The immortals fade one by one into obscurity, and then into myth, and then are finally allowed to enjoy their peace as well. Wei Ying laughs sometimes to hear the people in the city below refer to their home as the ‘Sacred Realm’. There’s nothing all that sacred, he thinks, about a mountain full of farmers and tinkerers and cultivators who take on any request, small or large, and ask for nothing more than a meal in return.
Still, perhaps they’re right after all - now as Wei Ying looks out over their home in the fading purple of a clear summer twilight, he thinks that maybe there really is something sacred about the waving grasses, the blinking of fireflies, and the feeling of his partner at his side to admire it all with him.
Wei Ying knows that it’s likely this won’t last forever - nothing does, not even immortals. But for now he can rest easy knowing that they’ve achieved the impossible, and that so long as they’re alive, someone will always be around to protect those who need protecting, and to stand for justice whenever or wherever it may be necessary.
He can’t imagine anyone coming along who would want to destroy something as wonderful as this.

Note
not to bring up the wei qing discourse again, but i was reading your yiling wei au again and i thought of an explanation that better fits both canon and chinese naming traditions, and i'm pretty sure no one brought it up during the discourse itself. iirc you cited madam jin as a reason to change wq's name, but the thing is that when you use furen (madam), you're supposed to attach your husband's name, which means that madam yu is actually the odd one out skdhskf. an argument could be made for how it symbolises the fraught tension between yzy and jfm, but yeah.
however, your name still stays the same. so madam jin's name would have stayed the same. she just would've been referred to as jin-furen. you can see this with jyl, who's referred to as jin-xiao-furen (young madam jin). also, i'm pretty sure cultivators keep their name regardless of their sect (see: su she and luo qingyang). it's just that most of the disciples we see are clan (familial) disciples, not sect (outer) disciples, which is why their family name is the same as the sect name.
so what i initially thought, upon reading your au, was that wq changed her name to emphasise her declaration of loyalty to wwx. family names in chinese culture is incredibly important, and to change your family name is to essentially turn your back on your ancestors. so what i read was wq turning her back on the wen legacy and declaring her loyalty to wwx in a way no one can refute. even marriage can be written off as political, but the changing of a family name hits a lot harder and more irrevocably.
her marriage to wwx, then, would've been inferred from her position in the entourage and her proximity to him.
btw, if you're comfortable with it, could you publish this publicly so more ppl are aware of this? it's okay if you're not skdjjs but i know a lot of cql fans don't have a lot of knowledge of chinese customs and stuff so yeah this might be helpful
hi! it’s nice of you to point all this out, but it was where i was going to begin with
my point with madam jin wasn’t that she changed her name after she got married because she got married. i’ve written people getting married in the untamed universe before i made that tumblr fic, and i didn’t have them change their name, because i was aware that that isn’t really a thing in chinese culture. and tbh i find character name changes to be a little jarring as a reader, so i avoid them when i can.
my point with madame jin - and at the time i thought she had a jin last name that she used outside of the madame title but i’m pretty sure that’s incorrect - and others is that in canon it seems like people are running around with clan family names without actually being part of the main family. this could just be because of messiness of the drama or because i’m just bad at keeping track of everyone’s names
so how i handled this in lynchpin was i had it being a thing where people take on the clan name while they’re apart of the clan. except for the jiang, who are little rebels.
so it would be like, for example:
birth name: wei ying; courtesy name: wuxian; clan name; jiang wuixan
so like, anyone could refer to any disciple in gold “young master jin” without knowing their real name. and people could either use their clan name or not, but most would as a sign of status and allegiance, but doing so wouldn’t be giving up their name
I UNDERSTAND THIS IS NOT CANON
the point is that i thought it would be interesting and a fun and useful convention to throw into fic. even though it’s not historically accurate, i think that that’s fine because there’s no historically accurate way to address large governing clans of magic knights because those didn’t exist
so when wei wuxian clarifies wen qing’s name is now wei qing, it’s to show he’s gone against the jiang practices he grew up with and in his clan people use a clan name.
it’s significant for the wen especially, because there’s a reveal in that universe (that, in all fairness, i never got to because after everyone got so upset about it i really didn’t feel like getting into) that they give up their birth name wen to only go by wei.
i’d had this scene that i really liked where someone claims all the wen have to be killed and wei wuxian was just like “what wen? there are no wen here. there are only wei.” but again, this whole thing caused so much drama that i just wasn’t interested in getting into it again
even though i didn’t go into that, when we see wen ning later in the fic, he’s going by wei ning
it was never about wen qing getting married. that’s why she’s introduced first as madame wei - to show that’s she’s married to wei wuxian, the clan leader of the wei - and then wei wuxian gives her name as wei qing. they’re signifying different things. if the point had just been to show they’re married and her name is wei now, he wouldn’t have clarified her name in front of everyone, since people obviously already know who she is
jiang yanli is in the same fic, married to jin zixuan, and i don’t refer to her as jin yanli. it wasn’t a marriage thing
did i expect that everyone who read my tiny tumblr fic would have also read my 100k monster fic and know i was bringing in similar ideas?
of course not.
but i also hadn’t expected everyone to jump down my throat about changing her name because she got married when i at no point ever claimed that was why she changed her name, nor had i had literally any other married character change their name
i thought i could just do what i usually do and go on to fill in worldbuilding and reveal in other installments so i didn’t feel the need to go into a deep dive of my motivations from page one
anyway
thank you for the information. i like the idea because it’s similar to the idea i already had. great minds think alike.

Fics I read this week!
I started this right after posting the last one, so I’ll hopefully keep it up. A lot of the multichapter fics are ones I subscribed to that finished. A lot of the one-shots are under 5k words, with some being 100-word ficlets.
Finished:
Not Rated:
Wei Changze's weird day, by Weiyingbestboy
Wei Changze was minding his own business, when four potential time travellers dropped out of the sky. Literally.
Serenity Cave, by Anonymous
The travel home had been mostly silent. Lan Zhan and Wei Wuxian competing for who could say the least amount of words.
Then, as they’d been walking along the mountain path, just a little past the gates of Cloud Recesses, a hole suddenly opened up in the ground beneath them and they fell into a small rock cave. Then the hole shrunk until it was barely big enough to poke a sword through. Just enough of a gap that they had a bit of light and wouldn’t suffocate, but definitely too small to escape through.
The earth had swallowed them.
In the middle of an argument, Lan Zhan and Wei Wuxian get trapped in a cave.
In Which Lan Xichen Returns to the World, by AshurbanipalJones
Lan Xichen ends his isolation after the death of Jin Guangyao.
In Which Lan Qiren Requests an Audience, by AshurbanipalJones

curiosity is the beginning, by everyearning (noctiphany)
He's just curious. Wangi's brother always said he had an insatiable thirst for knowledge. He also said it was going to get him in trouble one day.
Rated M:
devil from heaven, by incendir (3 chapters)
He would like to think that he knows what Lan Wangji could enjoy, if he’d let himself do so.
(or, wei wuxian's road to discovering lan wangji's yiling patriarch kink)
in this lifetime, by hauntedotamatone
Lan Wangji must reach him. There is still time. All he has to do is reach him. They’ll take A-Yuan and whoever remains and they’ll go as far and fast as they can. The world is vast, there must be a place for them somewhere, and if there is not, then he will carve one out from nothing if that is what it will take.
“Wei Ying!” he calls out to him over the roar of the flames and the familiar and terrible sounds of battle. At first, he thinks that Wei Ying is ignoring him or otherwise does not hear him. Then, his fingers still over his flute. He looks up with those empty eyes, unseeing. There is no hatred in them, but there is no affection or recognition either. There is nothing at all.
Lan Wangji has a terrible nightmare for the first time in years. For the first time in years, he does not wake up alone.
We Are Family, by Duochanfan (13 chapters)
Jiang Yanli heard the words spewing from Jin Zixun's mouth and said enough. After putting the man in his place she leaves the Hunt with her brother and Lan Wangji. The three come across Wen Qing, and with that simple meeting, they change what could have happened to something else entirely.
until it's time to see the light, I'll make my own with you each night, by backbones
His husband would never go back to sleep if he sensed something was wrong, and he always did. He knew him better than he knew himself, sometimes, and maybe that was why that feeling was so foreign it was horrifying. He wanted to keep that part of himself close, a well-kept secret, and now, deep down, he knew it was too late for that.
Or: After having a nightmare in a deep sleep, Wei Wuxian has a surprise visit from an old childhood habit.
Rated T:
Wei Wuxian Discovers Bisexuality, by arcaladiwoompa
AU where WWX decides he quite enjoys being passionately kissed against a tree by an unknown assailant and acts on it instead of just sitting there going herp derp I wonder who this very strong cultivator could possibly be.
Rescue, by WithBroomBefore (6 chapters)
Post-Sunshot fix-it AU featuring Jiang siblings taking care of each other, among other things.
Over the Rotted Bridge, by vailkagami (41 chapters)
Lan Wangji saves the Wen remants from execution but is killed in the process. The Yiling Patriarch loses himself in grief and rage and the determination to bring him back no matter what.
The world is not on his side in this. It is not on either of their sides when he succeeds. But The World is not all of its people, and some things can always be salvaged from the ruins.
Across, by vailkagami
An epilogue to the story "Over the Rotted Bridge", set in the far future. Cannot stand alone.
Centuries after the fall of the cultivation world, Wei Wuxian and Wangji return to the burial mounds for the last time.
Completion, by youjezebel
Lan Wangji misses raising A-Yuan. Wei Wuxian wants to be a father. In the end, everything works out perfectly.
Second Nephew, by vividneonmanias
"You need to stop talking to Wàngjī," Lan Xīchén told him, in the uncannily stern tones of a Sect Leader and not a nephew; "and preferably stop talking about him, if you cannot control yourself."
In the years following Wèi Wúxiàn's death, Lán Qǐrén learns to hold his tongue. But he still wants to know his second nephew. Some things need to be said; some questions need to be asked.
oceans, drowned in starfire, by stiltonbasket (10 chapters)
Lan Wangji breathes.
There is a tattered red ribbon trailing through the water beside him, and below him, a crooning, echoing song that clears his mind and stops him from struggling against the waves.
Lan Wangji breathes, and sleeps, and wakes again.
When he opens his eyes on the beach to find Huan-ge and Shufu crying over his body, he hears a lifeguard say that he was underwater for almost half an hour. ___
Tired of life in the business world, Lan Wangji returns to his mother’s old house to pursue a career as a novelist and search for the mysterious fisherman who rescued him after he nearly drowned on a whale-watching trip twenty years ago.
He wasn’t expecting much more than a quiet refuge to serve as inspiration for his work, and restore his spirits after half a lifetime spent in the city. But when a lost merbaby washes up on the beach in Caiyi, Lan Wangji realizes that his childhood savior might be closer than he thinks.
adding shadows to the walls of the cave, by Fleetling
It didn’t take Wei Wuxian long to see what he was pointing at, and as soon as he did, the smaller man turned back to face their juniors. “Cave!” he shouted across the thunder of the raindrops hitting the muddy path. “Hanguang-Jun found us a cave! We’ll stop to dry off, and head out again once the rain has stopped!” Beside him, Lan Wangji inclined his head in silent agreement. The bickering of the juniors cut out as they focused on making it the remaining short distance on the slippery ground.
They all huddled into the entrance of the cave, taking refuge from the rain, but waiting for directions before heading in.
Ouyang Zizhen ran his hand over the wall, feeling slight bumps and indents below his fingers. He brushed off the dirt, reading the characters revealed. “The lovers’ cave,” he read, shaking his head with a smile. Probably a local pair who came here occasionally. It was a bit romantic, when one thought of it. It also probably meant that the cave was safe - no lovers would hide away in a cave that contained resentful energy or other dangers.
Say It Until I Hear You, by DrowningByDegrees
Lan Zhan does not say what has him rattled, but neither does he retreat. He concedes by fractions, an embrace he does not shake off, a shaky sigh when his forehead comes to rest against Wei Wuxian’s collarbone, a wordless surrender when Wei Wuxian gathers him closer. Wei Wuxian doesn’t know precisely which ones, but there are ghosts in bed with them tonight, sorrow and regret and all the might have beens they cast aside so long ago.
Dull Comforts, by Just_Another_Mystery
Five times Làn Sīzhuī pondered the existence of a parent he does not remember having.
Downpour, by milesofheart
The way Wei Ying had looked at him…warily, expecting a fight, steeling himself for Lan Wangji to denounce him. Waiting for the worst from Lan Wangji.
Lan Wangji’s heart cracked down the middle and his whole body shook as he wept now in the rain, the mud of Qiongqi Path seeping into his once-pristine robes.
on the importance of home (and all it implies), by nixtothou
The Burial Mounds are empty.
Wei Wuxian had expected this, yet for some reason it still hurt to see.
The Best Place to Study, by adrian_kres
Lan Zhan decides to study in the law library this time. He leaves with a boyfriend.
Rated G:
cadillac converter, by mdzsed

or: lan zhan makes a complete idiot out of himself but hey, it scored him a date with a handsome mechanic so it's all good.
a small spark, by sebfish
It had started, as many things did, because Wen Qing was worried, and Wei Wuxian had learned early on that she wouldn’t budge until she’d gotten her way.
Winter in Cloud Recesses, by Sarehz
Winter in Cloud Recesses was cold. Really cold. It was a chill that penetrated Wei Wuxian's bones and reminded him of that period after his parents died when he shivered alone in the streets.
His Face, by AshayaTReldai
Among Su She's possessions was found a qiankun pouch containing a sheaf of sketches of Hanguang Jun, inspiring a lifetime's exchange between Wei Wuxian and his husband Lan Wangji, studies of his face.
anger, by theninjacat
Beloved Old Lines, by Preludian_Staves
A quiet Wuxian was a creature Qiren had learned to never trust in mixed company.
I Don't Wanna Fight Tonight, by Sarehz
Wei Wuxian was sitting on the roof. Again. It had become his go to place recently when he had to attend these sort of boring meetings where all the Sect Leader's met up and congratulated each other on defeating Wen Ruohan and blah blah blah.
Unexpected, by WithBroomBefore
It is not, from Lan Wangji’s perspective, an unpleasant kiss. He has no particular objection to kissing people, though admittedly he has only ever done so as a prelude to activities that involve various other bits of the body. And it is Wei Wuxian; nothing involving Wei Wuxian is awful. The kiss is...fine.
Modern AU, just some aroace/aro queerplatonic roommates finding the words.
An Accidental Clothes Thief, by Preludian_Staves
He should have probably realized what he'd accidentally done before starting work on a new talisman.
Groupie, by Speechless_since_1998
Being the manager of a band was hard work, but someone had to do it. And Lan Xichen was the only one able to keep members of his brother's band in line.
A Silver Thread, by DizziDreams
Lan Wangji is brushing Wei Ying's Hair before bed, when he sees it, glinting like a fish through the dark glassy waters of a deep pool:
A single, silver hair.
The sky is overcast and I'm sorry, by hamlets_ghost (8th part of a series)
Wangji's brother is gone once again.
A-niang explains.
Follow the sound of pipe, follow this song, by fairyprincess2
He took the last steps needed to reach the opening and there he was, black and red clothes flying with the wind, hair bound up in a ponytail with a red hair band. He was standing with his back facing Lan Wangji but it was him, he knew it was.
(In)Hindsight, it's obvious, by Potatoes_Radishes
Lan Qiren woke up undisturbed, calm and refreshed, that was enough for him to immediately know something was odd, mainly due to the lack of noises during the night that made him suspect it, he grumbled away his frustrations regarding what he assumed would have been another prank as he got up to get dressed.
When he left the bathroom and moved outside, a very different set of robes awaited him, one he hadn’t worn in years. He finally took a notice of his surrounding, the room was different resembling the one from before their rebuilding, not caring about his state of undress as he open the door almost on the verge of panic, the first thing that rang out in the morning was a loud yell of “WEI WUXIAN!!!”

taking over you, by sassybluee (3rd in a series)
Before, he’d once fantasized about giving in—shutting Wei Ying up with his lips, stilling his limbs with his own forehead ribbon. He imagined himself making demands. And then Wei Ying went missing. Wei Ying was presumed dead. And Wei Ying returned from the Burial Mounds. By then, Lan Wangji’s desires had long since cooled, and all that remained was longing. Longing to ease Wei Ying’s suffering. Longing to help him know he was not as alone as he seemed to feel. He would have gladly given him everything back then, if he knew how to ask for it. Would have surrendered his body to show him he cared.
And now?

Keep Holding On, by abCEE
As they reached an inn and Wei Wuxian got them a room with three beds, the world seemed to have frozen for Jiang Yanli when her brother suddenly fainted and Jiang Wanyin was just fast enough to catch him before his body could hit the floor.
"A-Xian!"
"Wei Wuxian!"
In which after the Lotus Pier Massacre: Wei Wuxian was greatly injured by Zidian, Jiang Yanli left the inn to buy the medicines and food, and Jiang Wanyin distracted the Wens.
(With a bonus of Wei Wuxian knowing the title of the song and more things ensued inside the Xuanwu Cave that may or may have not involved Lan Wangji's forehead ribbon)
Canon diverged from there.
Sacrifices Made with Blood, by NocturnalFriend
Lan Wangji knew it was too late, there was too much blood on Wei Ying's hands already. Still, if he asked his brother for help, surely. There was a way to rescue the man who held his heart?
Or: Trust is not easily given and all to easily shattered. Lan Wangji learns this in the worst way, when Lan Xichen gives into the demands of the cultivation world. Although nobody could have predicted the whims of fate, giving them another chance at righting things.
lan jingyi vs. the laws of time itself, by agloeian (2nd in a series)
His kick has dislodged some stray fragments of Guanyin Temple's destroyed ceiling beams. Jingyi stares at them as he kneads his toes through his boot. They’re as red as the blood that stains the floor beneath him, sharp and splintering. Wind whistles through the wood and stone, though there’s a flickering too - the sound of paper fluttering in the breeze.
A talisman written in blood.

Lan WangJi braced himself.
“Wei Ying.” he said.
“You are not dreaming. This is real. You have been rescued.”
“The kissing bit comes first!” said Wei Wuxian impatiently.
“But…I cannot kiss you if you think you are dreaming!"
“I don’t see the logic in that.” said Wei Wuxian. “I obviously want you to kiss me or I wouldn’t be dreaming about it!

Love Song In Reverse, by timetoboldlygo
Wei Wuxian gasps back into life without a single memory left. His friends, his siblings, his home — all lost to the fog in his head, nothing more than a mystery slipping through his fingers. What else was there to do but carry himself around in bits and parts, trying to become whole, a letter waiting to be written? He is – he is Mo Xuanyu, isn’t he? In this body, with these people. This family. He has to be Mo Xuanyu, he didn’t know anything else, even if the name sounded wrong. That was all he had.
Well, that and Hanguang-jun.
Lan Wangji, for his part, has had his taste of love and lost it. In all his grieving and searching, he didn’t expect to find another.

Wei Wuxian gets resurrected, loses his memories, and falls in love.
Here We Go Again, by Alliandra
He looked over to where the swordswoman was still fighting, but her focus seemed entirely locked onto that fight so it was unlikely that she could have had anything to do with the energy drain. He was still wracking his brain for something else to do to assist, so this thing didn’t kill them both, but now he was feeling weak, dizzy and currently not far from helpless.
~~~~~~~~~~
It has been several months since the events at the Guanyin temple and Wei Wuxian is wandering around on his own. After he helps a stranger kill a very dangerous beast he uncovers what seems to be a conspiracy aimed at ending his life. He heads back to Cloud Recesses with his new companion in tow, looking to get Lan Wanji's help in working out what is involved.
Meanwhile, Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling made a surprising discovery under Koi Tower that may well be linked to the threat against Wei Wuxian's life.
Can they all work together to find out what is going on and put a stop to it, before something disastrous occurs?
A Teacher’s Oath, by MaelStromm
Deep down, only one thing really matters.
It is not being a good Lan, despite what the entire cultivation world may think, nor is it "sucking the fun out of life" as some disciple had once said.
More than anything, Lan Qiren is a good teacher.
Despite too many to count prejudices and the boy's chaotic behavior, he'll burn his ribbon before he lets this genius be wasted.
Or :
ok ur top faves wangxian fics go
hey yati! 🥰️
alright, so first things first, here’s a big wangxian fic rec list i made a while ago, if you wanna check that one out too! consider the list below part 2. these are all my faves so far since my last rec list (as you'll quickly see, i have a LOT of faves).
and just a fyi/psa/disclaimer for anyone reading this: some of these fics have disturbing themes and/or kinky/freaky sex! make sure to check the authors’ tags and notes before reading. also, much like my first rec list, there’s going to be a mix of mdzs and cql canon, characterizations, dynamics, etc., so bear that in mind.
....ok GO
Wei Ying lets out a long, ugly groan. “I am fine, Lan Zhan. Everybody is overreacting, it’s so embarrassing for all of you.”
“You had undiagnosed pneumonia, which you walked around with for weeks until you passed out during dress,” Lan Wangji corrects him. “It got a big laugh, until everyone thought you were dead.”
He keeps his voice even and does not tell Wei Ying that it had been Lan Wangji who caught him, who called the ambulance, and who rode with him to the hospital, where he was yelled at by nurses who wanted to know why he hadn’t noticed that Wei Ying couldn’t stop shivering or string proper sentences together.
“Rumors of my demise have been vastly overstated,” Wei Ying says. “Anyway, I’m already feeling much better. Basically fine. Really almost completely back to normal, so stop babying me and tell me why the fuck you let your stupid brother hire the worst man in the world to host our show.”
swiss cheese theory by varnes | rated M | 19K words | sequel to snl au fic!!!!!! another must-read.
The Swiss Cheese model of accident causation likens human system defences to a series of slices of randomly-holed Swiss Cheese arranged vertically and parallel to each other with gaps in-between each slice. Defences against failure are modelled as a series of barriers, represented as slices of the cheese. The holes in the cheese slices represent individual weaknesses in individual parts of the system. The system as a whole produces failures when holes in all of the slices momentarily align, permitting "a trajectory of accident opportunity," so that a hazard passes through holes in all of the defences, leading to an accident.
best friends forever by varnes | rated T | 17K words | alright, so like, strictly speaking, wangxian isn't the focus of this fic, BUT. this fic is so good!! it is seriously so good, and it made me fall in love with jin ling/lan jingyi. also, it's varnes, so read it!
It happened like this: Jin Ling was a sect leader now, which was, and Jingyi really meant this, fucking hilarious. There were few things funnier, in his honest opinion.
Because he was young, and inexperienced, and also — it had to be said — a real shithead, there was apparently some belief amongst his advisors that the best way forward, to promote the picture of a stable, mature sect leader who absolutely did not cry at the drop of a hat, was for Jin Ling to get married.
OR: Jin Ling and Jingyi get engaged.
Things spiral from there.
For a Good Time, Call by ScarlettStorm | rated E | 171K words
The picture is of Wei Ying, that much is clear. It’s of a lot more of Wei Ying than Lan Zhan is used to seeing. He supposes that, technically, Wei Ying is dressed. It’s a bare technicality, since one of Wei Ying’s hands has rucked up his black tank top practically to his collarbone, showing a long expanse of abdomen and one nipple. Sweat beads on his sternum, catching the light like jewels. His other hand is--Lan Zhan feels his eyes widen, as though unable to look away from a train wreck--on his hip, one thumb tugging down the waistband of a pair of red briefs. Wei Ying is biting his lower lip and looking directly into the camera, sultry, his eyes dark and inviting. His erection is obvious, outlined against the red of the briefs and framed carefully with the hand on his hip. Lan Zhan’s brain goes wildly, screamingly blank.
"You want Wen Ruohan dead," the Patriarch continued idly. "You want his corpse puppets eliminated. You want his halls burned to the ground and his soldiers disemboweled and begging for mercy. Have I about covered it?"
He gave another knife-edged smile.
"But what will you give me in return?"
"We would be willing to offer quite a bit in return for Wen Ruohan's defeat," Lan Xichen admitted. "But I'm afraid we don't know what an immortal such as yourself desires. Please advise us."
The Patriarch waved at hand at the front of the tent. "I want Second Young Master Lan."
To say that he runs to his car would be incorrect, as he is a Lan, and running is both undignified and unnecessary unless in immediate danger. Nor does he slam his key into the ignition, or aggressively swerve around the cars on the freeway, or have a mild panic attack at the fact he is picking A-Yuan up late from school for the first time ever.
He comes close, though.
By the time he arrives, it’s 4:35PM, and he has imagined about fifty different worse-case scenarios. The door is partly open when he gets to it, a messy label of 104B—Art Room scrawled with chalk on a placard next to the faded wood. Sometimes Lan Zhan doesn’t work through lunch. Sometimes he makes conversation with coworkers in the halls. Sometimes he goes home instead of spending the last hour trawling through Grindr. But mostly, that’s exactly what he does. The sameness is comforting. His life spools out in easily measured increments: capsule collections, yards of hand dyed textiles, ninety day lead times, sell through figures, cost of goods sold.
Every date in manufacturing can be calculated backwards and forward from a single horizon point: the date that the goods must arrive into the country where they'll be sold. Other than that, nothing else really matters.
But the beating has also been thorough, so for now he forgets what he knows and leans into it, into the hand cupping his cheek. It’s soft and dry as those forgotten petals, as the touch of a pillow. He can smell wildflowers, can taste blood and dirt. My baby, his mother says, and he closes his eyes. My treasure. He barely remembers the sound of her voice, but the feeling of it is just the same. When Wangji was eighteen he’d walked into the first class of his fall semester painting module and there’d been a boy in a hilariously ugly floppy knit hat sitting cross-legged on the floor at the front of the room. He’d had a sheet of canvas paper taped to his board and his board clamped between his legs and a tackle box of brushes and tubes—a real fishing tackle box, with a fish-shaped logo on it that said BASS, not one of the nice art supply storage boxes they sold in the campus bookstore, like the one Wangji was carrying—open beside him. Everyone else had settled into the rows of stools and easels, but that boy had stayed on the floor for the whole two hour and thirty minute studio. Wangji had looked at him and thought, that idiot’s back is going to hurt.
Wangji sits on a stool and watches him, and after a while Wei Ying slaps the rag into the bowl and glares back. “Are you going to sit and stare the whole time?” he demands. “You want to see me strip naked and give my filthy evil self a good scrubbing, huh?”
Wei Wuxian locks his phone and puts it down, blinks at his ceiling, and picks it up again. The pictures are still there.
His first thought is that Lan Zhan meant them for someone else. That he just woke up at—he checks the timestamp—6:30 am on a Sunday and decided to go absolute full nuclear seduction option on some poor boy he met on Grindr, who would now be missing out on the best thing to ever happen to him because Wei Wuxian had a bad habit of distracting—of—oh.
Pieces of last night start to resurface and paste themselves together in his head. He winces.
The Golden Cutsleeve by syrus_jones | rated E | 77K words | of my faves, this is one of my favorite... faves. top faves. incredibly fun and silly and hot. just... oh my GOD, wei YING!
“I know! Why don’t you try it? Let me go and I’ll lend it to you!” Wei Wuxian bribed hysterically, desperate to escape from this encounter by any means necessary. And then, his eyes blew wide, realizing what he just said. ‘Wait— just what am I offering Lan Zhan?!’ he thought. How was he so stupid, how did he just offer that without thinking—
“You want me...to use it… after you?” Lan Zhan asked, his voice unusually faint.
~*~
Wei Wuxian's test of mysterious, literally magical sex toy goes awry when Lan Wangji finds him in the woods 'experimenting' with it and it ends up in Lan Wangji's possession.
Unfortunately, neither of them is aware that the toy is anchored to Wei Wuxian's body. Too bad Wei Wuxian invited him to try it.
Lan Zhan stands there in his immaculate, cloud-patterned Lan robes, watching him calmly, one fist tucked up against his back. “I am betrothed.”
Wei Wuxian blinks. “Are you…” He tries to laugh. Again, it sounds inhuman. “Is this about last night? Are you mad at me? I only remember some of it, Lan Zhan. I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable. I’m sure whatever I did I was just—” He gestures uselessly. He remembers being warm in Lan Zhan’s lap. He remembers fitting snugly in Lan Zhan’s lap. Wrapping his arms around Lan Zhan’s neck. Nosing at his jaw. “…playing around.”
“This has nothing to do with you, Wei Wuxian.”
Wei Wuxian puts a hand to his head, brain lost in fog. “Lan Zhan,” he pants. “Why are we here? Are we on a hunt?”
As Lan Zhan tries to remember, his brow furrows. He shakes his head slightly. “I don’t know.”
“This is bad,” Wei Wuxian says. When Lan Zhan cups his cheek again, sparks burst behind Wei Wuxian’s eyes. “Or maybe it’s not,” he says unthinkingly. Sighs, almost. Lan Zhan looks at his own arm like it's betrayed him. Wei Wuxian closes his eyes and presses his face into Lan Zhan’s palm. “Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan,” he murmurs. “What’s happening to us?”
There is a man with empty eye sockets and tears of fire in Wei Wuxian’s dreams. Tendrils of smoke curl around him in sleep, pressing at his most vulnerable spots, seeking entrance, slipping between his ribs.
When he ignores Lan Zhan's offers of help, he declines rapidly. He will die. Or, he should. Anyone else would.
Instead, he flees. And transforms.
No one listens to the radio in this day and age, but somehow from a bunch of left clicking and right clicking, through Facebook and Twitter and Youtube, Wei Ying finds himself on the WQHS homepage—the UPenn student radio station, promising eclectic tastes from a variety of hosts. Wei Ying can't remember giving a shit about his old college's student radio before he dropped out, but it's eleven at night and he has nothing else better to do. Lan Zhan's eyes had been wide with horror, and Wei Ying's had been equally wide with feigned innocence. He'd reached out slowly, maintaining the eye contact, and then flipped over the food waste bin full of onion peel and carrot skin as a distraction and slunk off into the night. Wangxian FicRec Masterpost
So I’d been getting a few asks for more wangxian fic recs so I decided i might as well make a master post where I just rec all the fics I’ve read and liked :) They aren’t in any particular order but I’ve grouped them into basic categories so it’s easier to find what you’re looking for.
*(some abbreviations: ER-established relationship, FWB-friends with benefits, AU-alternate universe, CD-canon divergence)
*under the cut cause it’s long
Canon Verse
*Post Canon
your words upon my lips by uchiuchi (Case Fic, ER,17k): In which Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji investigate a curse and get cursed instead. Everything they try to say comes out of the other person's mouth. It can only go downhill from there.
Four Parts Honey and One Part Vinegar by masked (ER, Humor, 13k):  Four times Wei Wuxian doesn't get jealous, and the one time he does.
The Absolutely True Story of the Yiling Patriarch: A Manifesto in Many Parts by aubreyli (Getting Together, 19k): In which the junior disciples (namely, Lan Jingyi, Ouyang Zizhen, and a reluctant Lan Sizhui) turn to RPF in an attempt to rehabilitate Wei Wuxian's reputation so that he and Hanguang-jun can get together and get married and live happily ever after. It's... surprisingly effective.
grow by cafecliche (De- aging, Gen, 14k): Wei Wuxian is cursed on a night-hunt, and the junior quartet rapidly finds themselves in over their heads.
You, Asleep and Dreaming by etymologyplaygroundSummary: (Fluff, 9k)  Wei Wuxian chuckles and starts pushing Lan Wangji's outer robes off his shoulders. "Poor Lan Zhan, subject to such earthly miseries. You must be exhausted, come to bed, come to bed." "Mm," Lan Wangji says. He raises his arms so that Wei Wuxian can keep undressing him. His clothes will end up on the floor, but no matter. Wei Wuxian's deft hands at his belts are worth wrinkled robes."... Goodness, Hanguang-Jun, you wear too many damned layers," Wei Wuxian tells him after a while. "Would it kill you to stop after a reasonable five?"
The (Several) Convenient Kidnappings of the Chief Cultivator by the Yiling Patriarch by misscam (ER, Humor, 3k): The Yiling Patriacrhc kidnaps Lan Zhan and it’s very convenient for everyone.
Content Warning: Romance by Ariaste Wei Wuxian just wants a little warning before Lan Wangji says nice things. Lan Wangji just wants to love on his husband, thanks.
Besieged by Ariaste (ER, 11k): Lan Zhan doesn’t like the idea of Sizhui getting married, Wei Wuxian has other ideas.
Diplomatic Incidents by Ariaste (Cross Over with Dragon Age: Inquisition but prior knowledge about it is not required,Getting Together, 35k): Wei Wuxian and the mortifying ordeal of being known
Love of a Different Kind by Keysmashed (1k, bg wangxian, LanXichen-Wei Wuxian /platonic/) Lan Xichen heard a beautiful yet incomplete-sounding melody from outside the Hanshi. Opening the door, he finds Wei Wuxian in a mess of handwritten musical score, composing a song.
A Lot of Edges Called Perhaps by hansbekhart (it’s just being sad and horny ngl, 21k): The funny part is - and it is a little funny, even if Wei Wuxian has no one left to share the joke with - they never have. Not anything. He has never kissed any part of Lan Zhan besides his slim hands; never been even partially undressed with him anywhere besides a miserable, xuanwu-infested cave. It’s always been like this between them, this simmering need, this desperate understanding: a knowledge so deep that it lives somewhere in his bones, that if he wanted to have Lan Zhan he could have him, and if Lan Zhan wanted Wei Wuxian he could have that too. But they never have.
*Canon Divergent
A stone to break your soul, a song to save it by rikke (Arranged Marriage, 180k) When the entire cultivation world turns against Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng comes up with a plan to save him and arranges a marriage between his brother and the Second Jade of Lan, Lan Wangji.
Wei Wuxian, Who's That? by bumbledees (48k): In which Wei Wuxian gets himself out of being Jin Sect enemy number one by becoming Lan Qiren's niece-in-law, and falls in love with Lan Wangji somewhere along the way.
A Wedding For The Age by spupeez4eva (Time travel, 6k): Where time travel occurs, and Wei Wuxian ends up being a guest at his own wedding).
Listen to the Voice Inside Your Head by pupeez4eva (Time travel, 12k): After a time travel attempt goes awry, a shameless, happily married Wei Wuxian finds himself traveling to the past in the most inconvenient way possible - being temporarily stuck in the mind of his fifteen year old self. His younger self just wishes he'd stop mentioning Lan Zhan so much. There's no way they're actually married, after all.
Jealous Thy Name by mmiles (4k): Lan WangJi listened to what she was saying and talked back! Wei WuXian can hardly get a sentence out of him but now that some Princess has come along he suddenly has lots to say?!Wei WuXian pouted and crossed his arms as he sulked quietly. or four times Wei WuXian was jealous of a Princess
an ode flows in you by tentatively (8k): In which Wei Wuxian feels threatened by a certain someone who has managed to make his Hanguang-jun smile.
Alternate Universe
*Modern Setting (Modern Cultivators)
and so my heart beats wildly by lily_winterwood (Hunergames insp AU, 106k) “You know, you’re the one to beat this year,” Jiang Cheng offers helpfully, having seen the glare from right next to him. “Hanguang-jun’s been through juniors with the rest of us, he knows all of our tics. You’re an unknown variable, since he’s never competed against you before.” “Thanks,” says Wei Wuxian drily. “That’s very comforting.” Or: five nighthunting competitions where Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji were rivals, and one where they weren't.
*Modern Setting (Non Cultivators)
tempo rubato by Spodumene (Highschool AU, 107k+):  Lan Wangji starts high school in perfect step with the rhythm of his uncle's expectations and his duty to his family. He doesn't quite stay that way.
your touch in the dark (your voice in the silence)by b_ofdale (Friends with benefits, 13k) :  When music begins to fill the silence of his apartment, Lan Wangji falls in love with it; not as fast, however, as he does with the busker down the street.
总有一天; a place to hide (can’t find one near) by yiqie (Pianist AU, 76k+) *tw suicide :  That’s just the thing, isn’t it? Wei Ying feels nothing. He doesn’t feel anything, and this emptiness should scare him. He knows he should be scared. He wants to be scared. He isn’t. Fear itself is never scary; fear is just a response. It means that your body wants you alive. It’s the absence of terror that scares him.
Year of NIght call by  ailuridae (abigailnicole) (Hospital AU, 22k):  Very few jobs give you the perfect storm of moral high ground, manic energy, and being a huge dick to people on the regular that Wei Wuxian finds so satisfying about trauma surgery. However, they don't call it trauma for its psychological wellness. A year of q2 36 hour call would be unbearable if Lan Wangji weren't the other fellow that he shares a call bed with.
the best of you by sysrae (College/University AU, 41k):  When Jin Zixuan calls in a favor, Lan Wangji ends up renting his spare room to Wei Wuxian. It doesn't go how any of them expected.
If I Can't Have You by Leffy (Actors AU, 47k): Lan Wangji hates Wei Wuxian. That's what Wei Wuxian and the rest of the world think anyway. That's also the reason why no one can wrap their mind around the news that Lan Wangji has agreed to star alongside Wei Wuxian, and as his love interest no less.(Spoiler Alert: Lan Wangji doesn't really hate Wei Wuxian)
(our friendship) up against the ropes by daltoneering (36k) The reboot completes, and Wei Ying’s brain smashes this information together into two mind-shattering thoughts. Number one, he knew very well already, and is now further seared by defined muscles and a mouth-watering tattoo into his every waking moment: Lan Zhan is the hottest fucking person on the planet. Number two: that guy wasn’t visiting Lan Zhan’s neighbour, he was visiting Lan Zhan, which means: Lan Zhan fucks.Lan Zhan fucks. Lan Zhan fucks.; Lan Zhan has been Wei Ying's best friend for years. Literally, years. How did he not already know? How has he missed this most important of facts? And more importantly, how is he ever going to get over it? (listen no judgement here alright?)
These Things Stay the Same by notevenyou (29k) After a career covering news across the world, journalist Wei Wuxian is unexpectedly on his way home with a child in tow. Unfortunately, the path home isn't without obstacles.
*Wei Wuxian gets adopted by other Sects/ is a Rogue Cultvator:
The Light That Fails to Dim by glowingreverie (Nie Sect AU, 310k+) In which Jiang Fengmian is unaware of what happened to Wei Wuxian's parents and Nie Mingjue takes him in and the story continues from there...
SanRen by Kyogre (Rogue Cultivator AU, 87k+):  Leaving YunmengJiang in an effort to curb the tensions in the Jiang family, Wei WuXian becomes a rogue cultivator. Even without the support of a sect, he is a rare genius whose name will become known across the cultivation world and whose techniques will influence the course of a war. However, what influences his own fate is a chance meeting that becomes the first step toward love.
*Domestic Wangxian + A-YUAN (deserves a separate place lol):
The Simplest Way Forward by harriet_vane (Accidental baby acquisition, 71k):  It’s a really unfortunate thing, developing a crush on your husband. Wei Ying had assumed this would be easy. Lan Zhan had been so icy and unpleasant to him, it had never occurred to him that he might end up spending the next however many years with this dumb, burning feeling in his chest whenever he looks at him. “Okay,” says Wei Ying. “But tell me if I…if the pretending gets to be too hard, okay?” “It will not,” says Lan Zhan, quietly certain.
Your heart, two doors by downficklish (Parenting, 9k)  Lan Zhan and Wei Ying start off as neighbors but soon find themselves fitting into the spaces in each other's lives like they were meant to be there all along.
Incomplete/WIPs
love, in fire and blood by cicer (AU/CD, 175k+):  In which the Sunshot Campaign ends through an arranged marriage to the Yiling Patriarch, and Lan Wangji suffers the mortifying ordeal of falling in love with his own husband.***highly recommended
The Murder of Crow by scerbykerby: After thirteen years in the Burial Mounds, the Yiling Patriarch finally makes a public reappearance. Civilians are scared. Cultivators are outraged. Sect Leaders are concerned. Wei Wuxian has been too quiet, they say, and nobody knows what dark horrors the Burial Mounds may now contain. Wei Wuxian wouldn't quite call them dark horrors, but the description wasn't too far off.(tl;dr Wei Wuxian lives, raises a whole gaggle of demonic cultivator children, and the cultivation world panics.) ***highly recommended
I will be chasing a starlight by feyburner, sundiscus (Start trek Universe, Friends to Lovers, 18k) “You know what?” Wei Ying said. “I think we should be friends.” “Vulcans do not have friends,” said Lan Zhan. He was staring very determinedly at the screen in front of him. Wei Ying frowned at him. “That can’t be right.”
War Prize! Lan Wangji
Here is a compilation of War Prize!Lwj Wangxian fics that I have found. I am a bitch for this trope and I really do hope more fics come up after this:
1) love, in fire and blood by cicer
Complete, Word Count: 360,042
"You want Wen Ruohan dead," the Patriarch continued idly. "You want his corpse puppets eliminated. You want his halls burned to the ground and his soldiers disemboweled and begging for mercy. Have I about covered it?"
He gave another knife-edged smile.
"But what will you give me in return?"
"We would be willing to offer quite a bit in return for Wen Ruohan's defeat," Lan Xichen admitted. "But I'm afraid we don't know what an immortal such as yourself desires. Please advise us."
The Patriarch waved at hand at the front of the tent. "I want Second Young Master Lan."
(In which the Sunshot Campaign ends through an arranged marriage to the Yiling Patriarch, and Lan Wangji suffers the mortifying ordeal of falling in love with his own husband.)
2) Possession by trickanery
WIP, Word Count: 52,373
When the Wen Empire launches a bloody campaign to extend the reaches of its borders, their first target is the Kingdom of Gusu. Between the might of Emperor Wen’s army, the leadership of his two biological sons, and the dark, unorthodox powers of his adopted son, Wei Wuxian a.k.a. The Yiling Demon, Gusu is quickly crushed.
As the spoils of war are divided and the surviving Lan disciples are taken as slaves and prisoners, Wei Wuxian shocks the cultivation world by claiming his first and only war prize: the young enemy prince, Lan Wangji.
Both men soon learn that the distinctions between cruelty and kindness, good and evil, and love and hate are hazy and thin — especially when two souls like theirs are fated to meet.
3) tie a knife with a ribbon by iliacquer
Complete, Word Count: 5,594
The Yiling Patriarch makes a bargain with the cultivation world. He'll give them the power to defeat Wen Ruohan. No more death. No more war.
All he wants in return is Lan Wangji.
Warning: Dubious Consent
4) what price is duty, what cost is love by thunderwear
WIP, Word Count: 12,923
The Patriarch had joked about putting him in a veil, but Lan Wangji refused outright, the only piece of autonomy he’d demanded for the whole thing. Being covered like that, trapped, would have made him panic. He might have let tears drip down his cheeks if he hadn’t had to worry about anyone seeing his face.
As Lan Wangji bowed, he thought of his mother, and he almost wept anyway.
In an effort to keep the Yiling Patriarch from destroying their own sects like he’d destroyed Wen Ruohan’s, the Great Sects band together an offer him an alliance in the form of a marriage.
Who better to offer than the Second Jade of Lan?
5) Peace is bought at an expense often thought too high by ceria
Complete, Word Count: 22,365
They are losing to Wen Ruohan and without additional help, they will fail.
6) found you, locked away in this garden by silverashes
WIP, Word Count: 6514
They had saved each other’s lives, once. The reason? Lan Wangji does not know. He does not know why he did not kill the Emperor, and why he was not killed in return. But now, the decision has been sealed. An unequal compromise, everyone had whispered, where the Lan Clan of Gusu is getting more than what the bargain is worth.
The bargain? An end to the war in exchange for Lan Wangji.
Warnings: Slight Dubious Consent
7) to porcelain, to ivory, to steel by sunsandships
Complete, Word Count: 27,165
When Jin Guangshan asked Wei Wuxian what he wanted in return for his support in seizing the throne from Wen Ruohan, Wei Wuxian thought about the beautiful, lonely figure he'd once glimpsed in an open courtyard in Koi Tower. The last of the Lans in the world.
It had been a long time since Wei Wuxian had wanted anything, but he wanted him.
He couldn't have known what getting what he wanted would mean for them both.
Warning: Dubious Consent
8) to topple kingdoms and cities by matcha_ado
WIP, Word Count: 9,635
“A bargain was made, and it will be honored.”
Warning: Dubious Consent
9) Fearing You, Loving You by MaggieoftheOwls
WIP, Word Count: 9,372
When Wei Wuxian came back from the Burial Mounds, he came back wrong. The only effect this has on Lan Wangji's feelings is that now he worries even more about him.
Warning: Dubious Consent
10) Sound it off by Silver999
WIP, Word Count: 481,816
Who do you trust? Are you willing to put your life in the hands of someone else?
Yunmeng Jiang emerges victorious from the latest war but the conflicts are far from being over. For starters, the two Jades of Lan now have to make it in Lotus Pier - a fairly hostile territory for two recently defeated cultivators who have been stripped of their powers. The rest of the cultivating world is not sitting idly either...
... also known as the AU absolutely no one asked for where alliances are totally mixed up, inter-clan wars are a common thing and the Lan brothers end up in captivity.
You're about to read a whole lot of plot and intrigue with sweet, slowburn Wangxian, fluff, angst and humor.
Spanish translation available, you'll find the link in the notes of chapter 1.
-Update (25/3/21)-
11) holding hands with you in this rain-flooded street by puddingcatbeans
Complete, Word Count: 12,768
After the war, the sects come together to write out peace treaties and contracts. As the Wen Sect is all but destroyed, the most terrifying thing in the cultivation world is the Yiling Laozu. Unfortunately, the sects owe him for ending the Sunshot Campaign in their favour.
When Yiling Laozu demands Hanguang-jun as compensation, no one is able to say no.
(or, wei wuxian marries himself to lan wangji for political immunity; but more importantly, he needs to dual cultivate with someone with a strong core or his demonic cultivation will kill him.)
MDZS & CQL Rec List (II)
Hey guys! Here I am with another rec list for mdzs and cql fics.
You can find the rec list for Wangxian getting together in Cloud Recesses here.
The theme for this rec list is:
Canon Divergence and AUs during and around Sunshot Campaign.
Please read the warnings in each fic before you proceed. The tags are not explicitly mentioned in the list.
The fics mentioned in this list are by no means all the fics available for this theme. If you have any fics (MDZS and CQL, both are welcome) that would fit this theme, let me know and I will add them.
 As of October 25, 2020, there are 14 works in this list.
The consolidated list, in no particular order:
1. Standing Engagement by x_los
Rating: M Word Count: 18k Summary: Lan Wangji believes he and Wei Wuxian are essentially engaged. While they search for his missing betrothed, he accidentally reveals as much to Jiang Wanyin. Now everyone in the cultivation world knows about the imminent marriage, except for Wei Wuxian himself.
2. Minding by WithBroomBefore
[Series] Rating: Gen Summary (of the first fic): He had firmly reconciled himself to things never returning to the way they were. On the surface, perhaps they haven’t; Wei Wuxian’s laughter is all but gone, as is the way he used to draw others into the brightness around him. The walls are still there, for all that Lan Wangji has now been invited inside them. Lan Wangji doesn’t care, because what has returned is the way they stay in step without having to think about it.
3. Song by WithBroomBefore
Rating: T Word Count: 41k Summary: Wei Wuxian almost does not catch the name of the song. In which the aftermath of the cave battle involves just enough communication to make a difference.
4. from the other side of sorrow by Sour_Idealist
[Series] Rating: M and E Summary: Yu Ziyuan cuts off Wei Wuxian's hand. The cultivation world changes.
5. i am the storm by everythingispoetry
Rating: M Word Count: 3.9k Summary: AU–ABO verse
Yet another thing Lan Zhan's education failed to teach him which he learns from Wei Ying: sometimes, acts of murder can be a love language.
6. Old Foreshadows by protos_metazu_ison
Rating: M Word Count: 15.1k Summary: Alternate Universe
 The young man leaned forward, elbow on a propped up knee. “You are all respectable cultivators,” he said in a lilting tone even as the veritable army below pointed their swords at him. “Was this really the best way you could think of to get my attention?”
With the threat of the Wen sect looming, the other major sects decide to summon the aid of a man they’d killed centuries ago: the Yiling Patriarch, Wei Wuxian.
7. But the rose was awake all night for your sake/Knowing your promise to me by x_los
Rating: E Word Count: 7.9k Summary: The resentful energy occupying Wei Wuxian's body like an enemy army is very interested in giving him Lan Wangji, tied up with a bow. Wei Wuxian is hoping that Lan Wangji (who is far too noble and very keen to save Wei Wuxian's misguided soul) doesn't find out about any aspect of that.
8. nothing gold can stay by rikke
Rating: M Word Count: 10.5k Summary:  Before Wen Chao can throw him into Yiling Burial Mounds, Lan Wangji finds Wei Wuxian.
9. Until It's Dark by suzvoy
Rating: M Word Count: 120k Summary: Lan Zhan finds out. It changes everything.
10. Grave of a Living God by  Gotcocomilk
Rating: T Word Count: 35.3k Summary: Time Travel AU.
He was Wei Wuxian, patriarch and pariah.
He was betrayed, he was broken.
He lived and died and lived again.
He loved, more than his heart could hold and beyond the scope of his skin.
He died.
Then he lived again.
Otherwise known as: Wei Ying travels into the past and lands in the private garden of Wen Ruohan. It doesn't go well.
11. Too Beautiful For Words, Will My Thoughts Suffice? by Watermelonsmellinfellon
Rating: T Word Count: 8.6k Summary: Telepathy AU
Ever since he could remember, Lan Wangji could hear what people were thinking. It should be obvious that he had become a master at reading people as a result. Then he meets Wei Wuxian, whose thoughts are the most brash and unrepentant he's ever heard. Now, for the first time in his life, he has to deal with the mind of someone determined to become his friend.
If only Wei Wuxian could stop thinking about how beautiful Lan Wangji was. It was distracting.
12. A Peek Inside His Mind by BarbaraAburi
Rating: M Word Count: 26.4k Summary: Telepathy AU
He allowed himself to lay down once more. Mind reeling over what he had found since waking up.
He could feel people’s emotions, every person’s emotions apparently had different sensations on him, he could hear their thoughts as well if this person was actively thinking in words, he could feel thoughts that were not words, like his Shijie knowing something he didn’t before.
And apparently, Lan Zhan loved him.
Or, What if after coming back from the Burial Mounds, Wei Ying had gained a few extra abilities due to his demonic cultivation? What if he had telepathy and could not only read minds, but feel the emotion of people around him?
13. Family by Quiet_crash
Rating: G
Word Count: 57.1k
Summary: Time Travel AU
The truth of the matter was that when it came to taking care of people and their problems, both he and Wei Ying were of one mind. However, whereas Lan Wangji was taught to care for himself as much as other people, Wei Ying, from early age, was taught that him having needs was burdensome. He disregarded his own pain with frightening ease and offered up evey part of himself for others to use with no reservation.
Thus, Lan Wangji made sure that his husband's needs were never overlooked, his hurts never unadressed.
So it was that when they purified an ancient temple and its goddess benevolently offered them each a wish in return, Wei Ying asked for his family: for Jiang Cheng to never have lost his parents and his core, for Jiang Yanli to never have lost her husband and her own life because of him; Lan Zhan asked for Wei Ying.
14. You ignite me by SakuraKage
Rating: T
Word Count: 2.8k
Summary:
Wei Wuxian accepted when Lan Wangji offered to help him during the Sunshot Campaign. But nothing ever seemed to come of it. What if Lan Wangji had found a way to help before Nightless City?
Or, Lan Wangji plays for Wei Wuxian every night and, even in the middle of a war, their longing for each other grows.
Fic Finder
~*~
1.  Hi, I'm looking for an Untamed fic, maybe you'll be able to help. It's a canon divergence AU in which WWX doesn't lose his core, Jiang Fengmian lives and it's implied that his core was transferred to JC (heavily implied; JFM retires as the Sect Leader after that). This is absolutely not the most important part of this fic but it's a paragraph that I've got stuck in my head and now I'm searching for the rest @_@ Thanks in advance! ~ @otemporaetmores
FOUND! by @notsobabblespace, who was reminded of  I’m aching and I know you are too by edenwolfie (part 3 in series, M, 23k, wangxian)
FOUND!  by @jim-is-spocks-thyla, who suggests ❤️ to arrive late is better than not to arrive at all by Moominmammashandbag (M, 35k, wangxian) [ETA:  Oops, not this one.  JFM has no core, but he didn’t give it to JC]
~*~
2.  Hi Mojo! I’m in need of you/your followers help in finding a fic that I read a little while ago. It was a fic where Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi lived together in Cloud Recesses and their children were Sizhui and an OOC that was younger than him. I remember SiZhui faced a lot of criticism for not being the chief cultivator’s real child? And they were happy he had a younger sibling that would be sect leader in the future because he was blood. Come to think of it, this is probably an ABO fic too. Thanks for your time 💜
FOUND! @andidontmeanto believes this is Blue Blood by PotterheadAvengerDemigod (T, 91k, wangxian, my post)
~*~
3.  Aksks it's like 3 am but I just remembered a fic and I can't find it?? I'd really, really appreciate your help. It was a wangxian fic, maybe a oneshot idk, and lwj was kind of a nerd and wwx a badboy? So basically lwj has a massive crush on him and dresses up like wwx etc. (i think he even got an undercut) and after a party they sleep with each other at lwj's place?
~*~
4.  i’m looking for a fic set in the where lwj’s mother killed his father? i don’t think that was a main plot point but it did show up in his backstory - any idea what this might be? ~ @thehype
FOUND!  @rentslirott thinks this could be ❤️the best of you by sysrae (E, 42k, wangxian, my post)
FOUND!  @castaways-logbook offers  The Right to Care by travelingneuritis (E, 39k, wangxian, WIP)
~*~
5.  ... same as #6 ...
~*~
6.  Hello friend, sorry for the inconvenience but I wanted to see if you could please find me a fic that I lost but I only remember more or less the final part, it goes more or less like this, lan zhan and wei ying are kidnapped by jin guangyao and lock them up if not I'm wrong in some cells next to lan xichen after the fights jin guangyao dies but lan xichen did know how bad jin guangyao had done and he didn't care and then to get revenge he wants to kill wei ying but lan zhan kills him and sizhui gets scared It was more or less like that, please help me ~ @isa0123lol
FOUND!  by @wangxiansfics who says that tragically it’s no longer available, but @dulachodladh found it on WaybackMachine here: Thread and Needle by haysel (M, 86k, wangxian)
~*~
7.  Hi, Mojo! I'm glad that you're back but I hope you enjoyed your time off tumblr! Can you and/or your followers help me find a fic? I think the summary was talking about wwx and somehow they were asking mingjue for help since he's the only one who can help. The summary was in italics and it's a dialogue from some guy? And a shorter summary below. Sadly this is the only thing I can remember but I hope you can still help me
FOUND!  @alwayswenning suggests love, in fire and blood by cicer (E, 360k, wangxian, has it’s own fanfic here, I just finished this last night!, my bookmark)
~*~
8.  Sorry to bombard you as soon as you're back, but this one's driving me crazy--a modern AU where they met online. WWX thinks LWJ is an old man from how he talks. I don't remember much except the excerpt made it seem like he still was amused by/enjoyed talking to him, and Wen Qing was telling him it was a bad idea and to stop. It's not How to Fall In Love With a Catfish, tho that one is brilliant! (Also any top notch identity porn would be great) Hope your break was restful, you deserve it! Thanks
Here’s my #identity porn tag, but I’m not sure about this exact story.
I'm the anon for #8 on the fic finder. Though I'm excited to read it, the suggested fic isn't the one I was looking for. I swear I thought I saw it on here around a month ago or slightly more, but searches have failed me.
FOUND!  Rating: General Audiences by Mishaa (T, 18k, wangxian WIP) -  mysterious author LWJ (speculated to be an old man because of his formality) and infamous artist WWX paired up for an Untamed Big Bang (in an AU where JGY was the series’ antiheroic protagonist; this fic was written before the release of CQL.)
FOUND?  could you be looking for  Something Real by Latios (G, 5k, wangxian, my post) - wwx thinks lwj is an old man, but there’s no WQ.  There are many pictures of bunnies.
SIMILAR! @emilysidhe thought of ID Bro Saga by Bowandtie (T, 39k, wangxian)
~*~
9.  Hey, how are you? Could you help me please? I've read 3 fanfics once, but I can't find them anymore. 1 - Nanny Problem, Wei is going to be the babysitter of A-Yuan, he is an omega and Lan is an alpha. 2 - Doctor Perfect, Yibo is an omega nurse and Xiao is an alpha doctor. 3 - The Baby of my Omega, Yibo is omega and Xiao is alpha, both of them are bodyguards, but Yibo has to protect Xiao in the beginning. I think they were at ao3, but I really can't find them. Can you help me please? Thank you!! ~ @weallmad
~*~
10.  Hi! Im happy you’re back. I hope you had a good break. I missed your recommendations, but at the same time i got a break from fics and actually studied to my tests haha.  [Ah!  I’m glad to hear your time was spent productively!]  I’m looking for a fic like Linger in the Sun by etymologyplayground. In the fic im looking for wangxian slowly lose their senses instead of all of them at once. Like they lose their hearing, then touch, sight etc, They can’t see each other or hear each other. I’m sorry i can’t explain very well.
FOUND?  Could you be thinking of  ❤️shadows in the sun rise by Yuu_chi (E, 25k, wangxian)?  Only lwj losese his senses one by one in this one, though.
~*~
11.  heyyy im trying to find this fic where wwx died the first time he was thrown in to the burial mounds then 10 years later he gets resurrected or something. I can't find it on AO3 and it's been bugging me for days. Thank you!
FOUND!  Well, @moku-youbi offers both of these as possibilities:
Did I Not Explain Why the Sunset Turns Red? by 3988Akasha (E, 100k, wangxian)
we're starting at the end by Miss_Enthusiasimal (M, 95k, wangxian)
~*~
12.  Hi I am looking for a fic where wwx is a witch (/mage?) in a world where magic is being persecuted (especially in Gusu) except for Yunmeng/Lanling I think but they're still frowned upon nonetheless. Then after accidentally hurting Shijie, wwx runs away, and ends up hiding in Gusu pretending to be a servant to lwj (lwj is a prince, lxc is the emperor) but lwj actually knows of his identity and tries not-so-discreetly to protect him from being caught. Thanks!
FOUND! by @bibliobasilisk who gives us Witchfinder by misbehavingvigilante (E, 86k, wangxian)
~*~
13.  Hi! Firstly, I'm glad to see you're back, and I hope your break was a good one! I'm trying to find a LWJ/WWX story that I had planned to read and ending up losing before I could. It was set in the immediate aftermath of the 33 lashes, LWJ is in the Jingshi recovering when a healer(?) discovers he's pregnant (by WWX). It may have been a/b/o verse, but I'm not 100% on that. Part of the story was a flashback to when WWX was still alive. Thank you!
FOUND!  by nonny themself.  It’s Unexpected Surprise by Glucose_Gremlin (E, 4k, wangxian)
SIMILAR! @mondelgel suggests my heart is kept as pure as ice in a jade vase/一片冰心在玉壶 by Daledesu (M, 21k, wangxian, WIP)
SIMILAR! from @impending-cuttlefish:  something new, something white, something blue by ariskamalt (E, 140k, wangxian, WIP)
~*~
14.  I'm trying to find this one fic where Jin Ling finds this diary that Wei Ying wrote as the Yiling Patriarch that basically reveals everything, including the golden core reveal and it even has training tips that helps Jon Ling improve. When Wei Ying comes back, he tries everything to keep him there because he is THE best uncle now. I need to find it because it is a N E E D.
FOUND? by @theladypeartree who says, “The Truth (Untold) is jl reading jyl's journals, not wwx's though. And mordant is jl returning wwx's journals that he found, not grew up with. Neither fit #14 properly, but I seriously could not find anything closer after two solid days of searching. Good luck!“
Sorry, do you happen to know that nsfw fic where wwx is still studying in the cloud recesses and he’s reading a novel (im not sure if it was from nhs) that features a cultivator couple and there’s a scene in the book where the woman was pegging her husband? Basically wwx got curious about this and tried fingering himself. I remember he was hiding in the back mountains and then lwj eventually caught him
18.  Ahhh I'm going crazy trying to think of a fic that I've read where Lan Zhan killed Wen Chao in a locker room and nie huaisang stood guard outside the door! 19.  Hi, I was wondering if you could help me find a fic. I read it a while ago and I don't really remember all the details but it was a modern au where Lan Wangji was a police officer in this small town and Wei Wuxian comes back after years, having left the town due to some stuff. Thank you in advance.
Btw love your blog. I live for your fic recs.  [Thank you!]
FOUND?  Could you be looking for medium blues by dark_and_terrible (E,193k,  wangxian)?  It appears to be taken down atm, but it might come back (it’s done it before).
Wwx lives in another city but he spent around a year in cloud recesses with lwj in the past. And wwx yanli and jc visits cloud recesses again and wangxian gets 2gether
11, 12, 46, 60?
Coming right up! :D
11. Tags You Mostly Filter On Ao3 For
Ah, you’ve made a critical mistake here, which is that... my brain has been largely broken and I have not read much fanfic in a long while, I mostly add things to my ‘marked for later’ pile :p I’ve got one or two authors that I know I adore and can keep up with semi-reliably, and once in a while I manage to consume something, but it’s not often, and that limited reading capacity is spread across all of mxtx and meatbun’s books
I will say that something I see a lot of for mdzs and which I have severely limited patience for is the ‘modern au’ concept. I’m not super opposed to it, and every so often I see a setting that’s perfect, like the yi city coffee shop au, but it’s... not very much my jam. There are exceptions, like just yesterday I added an xy/nmj fic to the marked for later pile, or there’s a wangxian + a-yuan adoption/immigration fic that I read and loved, but I usually won’t dip into this tag unless someone I trust is specifically recommending it to me
12. Saddest Moment
Oh, I know that the cliff scene is an easy target, even though it’s only the show, and it is very good, plus earlier in the nightless city when wei wuxian starts laugh-crying on top of the roof, or even earlier before that when the yunmeng siblings are tied up and being sent away on the boat and they’re all crying and holding hands underneath zidian.
But I read the book first, and this line absolutely destroyed me. It’s not a sharp pain, more of a quiet ache that gets worse the more you linger, but it still hits me terribly hard.
“Suddenly, he felt that the world had no place for him, despite how large it was.”
46. Favourite Fanfic / A Fanfic You Want To Recommend
HMM. Well. As I said, I’ve been absolutely awful at reading for a while now. But one of those authors I’ve managed to keep up with is the lovely @veliseraptor, and I can’t recommend just one fic, so I’m recommending two (I’m recommending them all, but I’m talking about two). First! The songxuexiao slow burn enemies-to-lovers, morally grey epic, if living can be this. And second! the yunmeng reconciliation + wangxian wedding fic that I never knew I needed so desperately, With Absolute Splendor. Both of these are unbelievable, and they star my two favorite hopeless disasters from this story, xue yang and jiang cheng. They both take emotional side threads from the show that end on a sad note, and put in the time to turn things around and bring them to a solidly constructed, happy conclusion. I love the main story, but I also love being happy about my favorite not-wangxian children, and the book/show don’t necessarily put the time in to do that for me, but these fics absolutely do.
60.  Favourite Character Development
xue yang xue yang XUE YANG
Oh my god. I love him. I would love him as a one-note villain, but you know what I love even better? The growth from itinerant serial killer to contented homemaker. And... it’s not exactly character growth, but I love the gradual reveal of his backstory as he gets more entrenched in his home in Yi City. It gives so much more depth to his character, and adds extra flavor to his changing priorities in the yi city flashbacks. It’s sort of like... mxtx gave us a very simple, flat character in Shen Jiu at the start of svsss, and flashbacks gradually add depth that make me hurt terribly on his behalf, and Xue Yang isn’t as central to this story as Shen Jiu/Qingqiu is in svsss, but she really has this knack for setting up an unsympathetic character and then sucker-punching me later with feelings.
The thematic parallels between Xue Yang, Jin Guangyao, and Wei Wuxian have been discussed in a lot of depth by other people, and I’m not going to retread that ground, but it does fascinate me to realize that of those three characters, all of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds and are overflowing with potential, Xue Yang was the one who settled on the most reasonable life goals. Wei Wuxian set his heart on protecting the Wen remnants and became the Yiling Laozu, Jin Guangyao clawed his way to the top of a major sect, Xue Yang... wanted to live in boring poverty, but boring poverty with a house and a family that were his. I’m not going to rehash all the meta I’ve written about him before, and it goes without saying that canon hurts me very much when it comes to his ending (seriously, go read that fic I linked above), but I love seeing a character make that emotional journey through ‘what do i want? what will make me happy?’ and settling on something so quiet and domestic, especially someone with the background he has. I just. I love him, your honor
2020 favs: (short) fic recs
I am stealing this idea from @macgyver-sheriff, who has no clue who I am, but whose post I saw go across my dash. Thank you! 👋
Would you like some recs for the holiday season? - I too would like to share love for my favorite things I read that were written this year! <3
I’m going to do this in two parts - the short fics (10k or less, generally one-shot), and another post for the long or series fics I loved this year (it’s 2020, I figure we can use too much of a good thing?)
( @staidwaters - I’m ‘disqualifying’ your works because I’m biased, sorry! Look away! Unless you want recs!)
"Congratulations, Get Rich" (9,238 words) by Attila (The Untamed - modern AU)
Tomorrow is Chinese New Year, which means Wei Wuxian has to get all of his bad decisions out of the way tonight.
Lan Wangji, Lan Xichen, Jiang Cheng, Mianmian are all so screamingly perfect as modern versions of themselves in this, and it is KNOCK DOWN HILLARIOUS. Wei Wuxian is just a screaming queer disaster (affectionate) - as he should be.
Excerpt:
After a long beat, Lan Xichen sinks gracelessly into the chair Lan Wangji had been sitting in earlier. “I just want to be absolutely clear,” he says delicately, “that you are currently under the impression that my brother has no romantic feelings for you. That is what you’re saying to me right now, yes?”
“Yes?” Wei Wuxian says, feeling desperately confused. “Obviously? Why?”
“Because at least one of you is very stupid, and I’m trying to figure out who,” Lan Xichen tells him, sounding distracted. It’s the rudest thing Wei Wuxian has ever heard him say, and his mouth drops open slightly.
“caved to the careless” (6,708 words) by ilgaksu (The Untamed/MDZS - Song Lan/Xiao Xingchen)
Love is a choice you make - like this, and this, and this.
Have you ever read a writer whose work is so distinctly itself that you can feel yourself slipping in time even as you keep going? That’s not very articulate, but it’s the best way I can describe everything of ilgaksu’s I’ve read. Their fics are the same emotional register as having the breath knocked out of you after a fall. This was the first one I read, and I think it ends well-- with what Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen find along the path-- but it’s still heavy. Discussions of canon-compliant character death and grief/mourning here.
Excerpt:
He pauses. Until this very moment, he was unsure who to ask for. He has heard the rumours of the Yiling Patriarch’s ongoing residence here, about Zewu-jun’s seclusion: he’s dead, but even the dead are not free from gossip. But he remembers a courtyard, nearly two decades ago, and the weight of eyes some might have called angry in their intensity. He remembers those same eyes, and how for the wear of the intervening years, they had kept the same essence: longing, yearning, a kind of small unspoken grief.
Song Lan had a dream once. A dream of a sect, bound not by blood, but by a shared belief in the right path. So many things are only an inheritance: shame is one of them.
Love is a choice. Love is a choice, and you choose until you can’t.
“I am here,” he decides, carving the words into the dirt, every stroke of every character resolute, “To meet with Hanguang-jun. Please show this one the way to go.”
“Green River Running” (8,169 words) by @rain-hat (Love in the Moonlight - post-canon AU)
5+1: Kim Byeong-yeon returns to the land of the living.
I skimmed through Love in the Moonlight during my quarantine summer (distinguishable from my “quarantine spring” or “quarantine fall” only by fireworks), and immediately upon finishing, thought: “Psht, they killed off their best character.” And then, something happened that never happens -- I went on ao3 and found the exact thing I was looking for, written far  better than I could have imagined. Kim Byeong-yeon is such a quiet yet powerfully subversive presence and the progression here is so masterfully done. This is true of all of rainhat’s work’s I’ve read, but this is a fine example-- I really treasure the warm humanism of them.
Excerpt:
People needed helping hands even more than they needed sympathetic ears, though. Over the last year, Hong Gyeong-rae and Byeong-yeon had built houses and planted crops side by side; negotiating with moneylenders here, helping small-folk secure their stores against bandits there. There was nothing courtly about Byeong-yeon’s capacity for labour, or his expectation of reward. Wherever he went, he worked from dawn to dusk, ate the food he was given, and slept under a roof if he was offered one.
It suited him, Hong Gyeong-rae thought, even though there was something outlandish about his gentle speech and palace manners in the midst of it all. But to behave in any other way would be untrue to his upbringing; nor was he the sort of man to whom it would occur to try. And after all, most people liked to be treated with courtesy; it did not come across as mockery from this solemn, severely dressed young man, who seemed to find no task too big or too small. Hong Gyeong-rae had seen him argue tax law with local councillors and stand up to highwaymen armed with nothing but a knife and staff. But he watched cooking pots for women who had to run to the fields to tide over the day’s labour, too; he wrote letters for them, and tolerated their fractious children and spoon-fed their bedridden elders, if that was what was called for.
“The Veritable Records of King Taejo: Year 2, Entry 208“ (9,857 words) by @sadviper (My Country: the New Age - Nam Seon-ho & Hwang Sung-rok slice-of-life)
Hwang Sung-rok eats his way to the bottom of a real estate scam, and Seon-ho and Yeon help (a little).
No one is out here doing it like SadViper. This is technically part of a series, but they can all be read separately. I did not realize I needed to see more of Nam Seon-ho in all his “type-A government official glory” until Viper started sketching him out for us, and as a bonus, we get to see Yeon, and Sung-rok as the world’s surliest caretaker (but don’t call him that). I have an authorial fallacy where I always think stories have to have some grand “plot” -- a “Maltese Falcon” to pull the reader along-- the genius of Viper’s work is she shows us exactly how interesting and important the day-by-day tiny choices and connections we make are, with an impeccable background of historical research to ground you in the setting.
Excerpt:
Nam Seon-ho was his master now. He was a strange one. He was a traitor, for helping the escaped Liaodong soldiers, but not, because he managed to wiggle his way back into Yi Seong-gye’s favor and was now a sixth-ranked inspector with the privilege of having personal audiences with the King. He was temperamental and belligerent from being the son of a slave mother and a lifetime subject of Lord Nam’s fantastic parenting philosophy. He was afflicted with perpetual guilt. And he was also one of the hardest working and most desperate people Sung-rok had ever known.
It was a terrible combination. He was not merely a disaster waiting to happen, but a disaster perambulating on two legs at the edge of a chasm. If Sung-rok intended to stay in service for long, he needed to find a way to cool down some of Seon-ho’s intensity, even though admittedly, it was what drew him to Seon-ho in the first place.
Thoughts like these plagued Sung-rok for a while. It was one thing to know a person; it was quite another thing to try to change them.
“Orison” (4,975 words) by @gravelghosts (aeli_kindara) (Supernatural 15x18 coda)
Cas says, I love you.
So! This rips my heart out, every time. All the times Dean imagines himself together with Cas...and then he imagines himself, if not happy, then thriving.
Jack: “What is the point...if everyone I care about is going to leave?”
Castiel: “The point is that they were here at all and you got to know them, you... When they're gone, it will hurt, but that hurt will remind you of how much you loved them.”
Excerpt:
The thing Dean tries to do is: listen.
Happiness isn’t in the having. It’s in just — being. It’s in just saying it, Cas tells him, and Dean’s whole heart is screaming, No, but he shuts his mouth. He listens. He listens like his life fucking depends on it, which it does, in more ways than one.
“Sky Full of Song” (6,632 words) by @drivingsideways (Supernatural, finale 15x20 fix-it, Dean/Cas)
Or: The One in which Cas ghosted Dean.
Look. Look. If Cas(tiel) can yank Dean Winchester out of Hell, celestial-scream at him not once but twice, burn out a woman’s eyes like an utter clown before thinking “Huh, an Earthly vessel, guess that’s not just bullshit, then,” and when they finally work it out, Dean greets them with a knife to the chest and THEN they’ll spend twelve years misunderstanding each other and bickering, you had better believe these two are going to be disasters even in Heaven. Drivingsideways gives us all of that dynamic, with the found family of Jack and Mary as facilitators, and the happy resolution, which of course includes a true form “roughly the size of your Chrysler Building.” <3
Excerpt:
The thing is, Castiel doesn’t want Dean to feel obligated.
Dean has a streak of self-sacrifice that's as wide as the Caspian Sea, and Castiel doesn't want to be any more of a chore or obligation than they have been to Dean for all the long years of their—brotherhood.
Castiel had shocked Dean, to the core of him, with their confession, and Castiel had seen the swirling confusion, the fear, the panic, the shit what do I say, what do I do—how do I stop him—
So, no, Castiel would not be paying a visit anytime soon.
Of course, if Dean evinced an interest in meeting them, then Castiel would not stay away.
Castiel isn't that cruel.
(They have, on occasion, been exactly that cruel, but they are trying to outgrow it.)
Dean is still their friend.
Dean knows how to reach them, if he wants to.
(see? disasters. haha)
“The Rough” (3,267 words) by anactoria (Supernatural, finale -15x20- ‘fix-it’)
 Heaven can absolutely fucking wait.
Rec’ed for the concept more than the style (this is dialogue-heavy, as a lot of 15x20 fix-its tend towards), but I *love* this course-correction: After kicking around Heaven, Dean and Cas return to Earth to take their place as urban legends among the hunter community. Just for a while.
Excerpt:
But it isn’t life. That’s the thing. It’s awesome, but it isn’t life; life’s a hard, painful, infuriating mess, and Dean only got halfway through his own, and he feels cheated. For all he held it together for Sammy at the end, for all he tried to take Cas’s big moment-of-happiness speech on board, he feels cheated.
There’s supposed to be peace at the end. When you’re done.
Dean wasn’t done.
Fair Play by threerings
Synopsis: “Do you ever want to try out my role?” He propped himself up on one elbow and looked at his husband. Sweat still glistened across his bare chest from their recent exertions and Lan Wangji’s expression was soft and open.
“Hm.” The sound wasn’t either a negative or a positive.
“What does that mean?” Wei Wuxian asked. “Have you thought about it?”
“Wei Ying wants that?” Lan Wangji met his gaze, his eyebrows raised.
“Hmm.” Now it was his turn to hum noncommittally. “It’s not that I don’t enjoy this. Obviously, I do.” His smile twisted into a bit of a smirk as he gestured between their naked bodies. He could still feel the imprint of his husband’s strong hands on his hips, on his right thigh. Still feel where he’d pounded him until he begged for mercy. “But it feels so good...I might like to make you feel that good, too.”
Thing was… it wasn’t such a bad idea.
